Find the file, check out it's properties, who is the provider etc, however there is no winmg.exe on my XP home system.

winmg.exe is a Virus which causes your computer to hang from time to time. Causes programs to close like Regedit. You can manually remove it by booting up in Safe Mode. Run regedit and delete the entries for winmg.exe. Do a search and delete the file winmg.exe and also another file winmg.pol. You'll find these files in the System32 directory.

Did you boot up is Safe Mode when you tried to remove winmg.exe? Also look to see if you have lsas.exe if so delete that also. You might also want to see if you have the file svchost.exe in the Windows\system32\wins directory. After you delete those make sure you install your critical updates. Do you have a current virus checker installed?
