Download HJTsetup.exe from this link http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files... to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This. Please install it there.
Continue to click "next" in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
Put a check by "Create a desktop icon" then click "Next" again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click "Finish" and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the "Do a system scan and save a logfile" button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log and post it in this thread.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/Smitfra... to your Desktop.
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Post this log along with a fresh 'HJT' log.

This program- "FlashGet" installs Adware that is not removed without registration. If you haven't, do so or remove it.

Go to 'Control Panel/folder options/view' and check 'show hidden files and folders'.While there, UNCHECK 'hide protected operating system files(recommended)'. Click Apply and Okay.

Update Ewido and Spysweeper.

Download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link
http://www.atribune.org/content/vie... You will need it later in safe mode.

Download 'Killbox' here http://www.downloads.subratam.org/K... to your desktop. You will need it later in safe mode.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following.

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".

Choose your usual account.

Very Important:
Make sure all security programs- Norton, Norton ScriptBlocking, Ewido, Spybot, etc are DISABLED until they are needed. They will interfere with the cleaning process.

From safemode, run HijackThis and put a check by the following entries if still present, close all open windows and browsers except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'

Hi there

By the way, thank you for your help up to this point.

I got through all of your steps, up to the Killbox step where I tried to delete the "...\winlft32.dll" and it told me that it could not delete the file. Is that a problem?

Also, just as a forethought to the next step, I do not have a purchased copy of Spysweeper, so I won't be able to quarantine any files, only scan; if that's a problem?

Okay, forget Spysweeper. Just the Ewido scan.

But first, do this.

Run HijackThis. Select 'Misc.Tools/Delete a File on Reboot"

Navigate to -C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winlft32.dll

Click open.Okay.
Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now. Click Yes/ok
Your system must reboot now.

Once back in windows, reboot into safemode and begin with the Ewido scan and the rest of the instructions.

Hi XpUser4Real

Thank you for your link...unfortunately I do not have a purchased copy of Spysweeper, so I would not be able to quarantine any files, I am only able to scan.
Is there another way to do it without Spysweeper?

Spysweeper tells me I have the infection, but I can't delete it with Spysweeper unless I subscribe, which costs $40US.

It is probably a false positive then to get you to buy the software. I had that problem awhile back and reported it to Justin.

If your PC is running fine, forget about that problem, it is just another way to make you buy the product. I HATE that stuff!

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

Sorry for the delay.

run HijackThis and put a check by the following entries if still present, close all open windows and browsers except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - (no file)

Go to 'Control Panel/ System/System Restore' and check the box ' Turn off system restore on all drives' click 'apply' and 'okay'.Reboot your computer and then enable system restore again and create a 'New Restore Point' by going to 'Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore'.

Run ATF cleaner and then run this free online scan from Panda This scan also does removal.Once finished, save the 'Panda' log and post it here.

Ewido says your clean but we'll make sure.

After more research, it appears you are infected with a very difficult to detect 'Rootkit'. I am including this link http://swatrant.blogspot.com/ for removal instructions. Scroll down to ' Removing Mailbot.AZ (aka Rustok.A) Rootkit'.

Hmmmm. Does Spysweeper still alert you?.If so, post what it says.

Also check here for these entries. Let me know if they are present. Make sure this is still done. 'Control Panel/folder options/view' and check 'show hidden files and folders'.While there, UNCHECK 'hide protected operating system files(recommended)'. Click Apply and Okay.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\lzx32sys
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lzx32sys

Delete this folder- C:\!KillBox\

Run ATF cleaner- make sure you tick 'Select All'. Panda, like Ewido is only showing cookies.

Just doing a little investigating on my own, I came across this link:

http://www.sophos.com/security/anal...

Reading the technical details for this virus I wonder if it is connected to what I have? The reason I link the two, is that I believe I may have gotten the virus by clicking on a file the popped up on my desktop called "mit". It open a dos prompt window and started very quickly to displaying line after line of something, before I just closed the window. Perhaps this is the mit.bat file mentioned with this Trojan Nebuler-E

Troj/Nebuler-E is a Trojan for the Windows platform.

Troj/Nebuler-E includes functionality to access the internet and communicate with a remote server via HTTP.

When Troj/Nebuler-E is installed the following files are created:

<Temp>\mst1.bat
<CurrentFolder>\mit.bat
<System>\win???32.dll - where ??? indicates 3 random letters.

The dll file is also detected as Troj/Nebuler-E.

The following registry entries are created to run code exported by win???32.dll on startup:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\win???32
DllName
win???32.dll

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\win???32
Impersonate
0

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\win???32
Startup
EvtStartup

Registry entries are created under:

HKCR\MezziaCodec.Chl\CLSID\
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSMGR\

Kaspersky shows everything is in the 'Norton Quarantine Folder'.

Proceed to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\ and delete the entire contents of this folder. Run ATF cleaner- tick select all and reboot. If everything appears in working order, you will have to flush System Restore once again. Make sure to create a new restore point after doing so. You should now be clean. If you are curious, un-install Spysweeper, make sure no registry entries are left behind and i will try to provide you a link to a Webroot Spysweeper trial that does removal also. It's probably picking up a few left over harmless entries. Let me know.

Ok, I will remove Spysweeper, but how do I ensure the Spysweeper registry entries are removed?

Okay. You obviously haven't manually edited the registry before so use this free program 'CCleaner Basic' http://www.ccleaner.com/download/bu...

Run it and select 'Issues'.It will scan the registry and remove leftover entries.

Here is a link to a working trial of Spysweeper- http://www.webroot.com/shoppingcart...
