I'm stumped. All of a sudden, after suffering weird things like the loss of my mouse driver, I can't boot XP on my Gateway desktop except in safe mode. Talked to Gateway about this today and they said I had wink.class - a virus that was creating all my misery. I've run the Symantec Klez removal tool but it says I don't have the Klez virus (either w32Kelz.gen@mm or w32.elkern.gen). I found "wink.class" in com/ms/win32 (in a larger zip file), tried to rename it (couldn't) and so I deleted it. I still can't get XP to boot up (except in Safe). What in the world do I do??? Please help. I'm now working on a laptop that, much to my horror, also has this same wink.class file. What in the world do I do??

Have you used your antivirus recovery disks and did they not work?

Just about any updated antivirus program should have detected and repaired this. I am surprised that yours did not detect/clean or at quarentine it. Have you used the on-line scans at the Symantec, Trend Micro, Panda, Macafee websites.

seems to me you have to clean Klez ... either download the standalone cleaner or and entire scanner. Try www.srnmicro.com ; www.nod32.com ... you should consider downloading nod32 and getting the nod32dos the entire package is about 3.5 mb and then get into dos and run the nod32dos ( C:\PROGRA~1\ESET\DOS32\NOD32DOS.EXE } thats the best scanner in dos i have seen to date ... it should clean your virus ... then see if your pc will boot and clean the virus payload ... look at other posts from klez ... you can also try f-prot dos from www.f-prot.com ... but i doubt that it will clean klez i haven't seen it do it yet. Your best bet is getting a scanner that will just extract ... since installing software in safe mode can screw your pc.
I wonder one thing ... how the hell you get klez on both computers ..haven't you ever heard of a virus scanner ???

wink.class is a normal windows file
do a system restore it should replace this file.
if you want to search for wink files from klez do a search for wink*.* and you will fined a lot of files with a bunch of letters and numbers beside them.
but since the klez tool found no klez you aint got it.
and your tech suport is full of gas.
you can "quote" me to them.

Thanks, you're the first person that has figured out that wink.class isn't part of Klez!! I finally figured this out after installing countless anti-virus programs to scan for the Klez problem. Interestingly, I just searched for wink.class and it reinstated itself. Don't ask me how.

Any ideas why I can't boot up my system except in safe mode? I'd appreciate any thoughts -- and I'll be happy to tell the Gateway tech that they sent me down the wrong path!!!

hello.
wink.class being part of windows it cant be delete from windows so it seams. as for your not booting except for safe mode try the xp forum.
did you try system restore?
what soft ware have you added lately.?
look in device manager for errors.and or conflicts.
if no other problems are found. try uninstalling any added soft ware starting from last instald on back reboot after each removel.
are you sure its safe mode and not just vidio droped back to 16 colors?safe mode should say safe mode in each corner.at least in m.e
and ive only been in safe mode once in xp.and dont remeber if its the same.
have a nice day

since you can get into sfae mode ... your problem cannot be that serious .. i have to assume something in the boot sequence is blocking you. Otherwise you may have some corrupted system files.
Look at your boot log.

can u provide more details on how u are not able to boot up? at what point does it freezes/crash?

since you can boot into safe mode, first try using msconfig and uncheck all the items in startup, if it works, then check each item one at a time to isolate the problem.. if it doesn't work, go a step back and uncheck all items in service at try it one at a time...

Thanks for the help, folks. I think I got it figured out. Wink.class is not a virus but a part of the OS. The only way I could get around the problem was to resort to the XP disk's repair program. Now I can't create a DSL connection. But I'm working on it. Don't think I'll kill myself over this one. Thanks!
