I've had problems since I installed Norton Internet Security 2003 on my PC. The usual problem is with startup...the following problems occur at different times:
*the desktop icons don't load (ie. 'my computer' icon, 'my documents' icon, etc), but everything else loads - this is the most commonly occurring problem and was happening approx. 1 in 4 starts
*none of the icons in the system tray but all the taskbar and desktop icons load - this happens infrequently
*everything loads except for the Norton Internet Security and Antivirus icons in the System tray.....in this case, the desktop icons loaded fine, including the Norton icon. When I opened Norton Internet Security, all the settings were disabled or off - this happened only onceMy pc has been thoroughly checked for hardware problems and is also virus-free. The tech advised that the problem appears to be Norton/Windows ME related but offered no solutions and said that no patch was currently available.
Has anyone had a similar problem or have any ideas of what to do? I'm trying to investigate some timing problem with startup, but I'm not confident that I have sufficient knowledge to pursue this without help.
Also, I have followed a suggestion to check system settings in the Config.sys file and have tried to open the Config.sys file in MS-DOS editor to check the entries. My information suggests to ensure certain lines are entered correctly, but when I opened it up, there was nothing at all. I do not know what this means. Any suggestions about why I have this finding?

Do you install them separately or as one program? If it is one program, try installing them seperately. Also make sure you try to stop all the unnecessary programs running in the background when you install them, by using ctrl/alt/delete> When you uninstall Norton have you used the Symantec removal tools rnav2003 and nis to make sure everything that might corrupt the new installation is removed?
