WIndows XP won't switch user

I think I had a virus a week or so ago - windows explorer would not start upon booting up. I think that I got that fixed, but now although I have windows XP set up with multiple users, if I try to "switch user" (windows key-L), if I go back to the main screen and choose any other user, the screen just flickers and returns me to the select user screen.
If I choose "log off" then I am able to log on as any user.
