Specs: Windows XP Pro (SP3), Intel Celeron 1.30GHz
Windows XP (SP3).Last night everything was fine. The AVG Free icon was where it should be at the bottom of the screen. Tonight when I turned it on, the AVG icon was gone and there is a red shield shaped icon with an "X" in the center. When I clicked the shield, it goes to the Security Center. Here it states the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition may be out of date. When I then clicked recommendations, it suggests I update the virus protection program. The Security Center shows "Automatic Updates" already chosen, but it's a Windows icon, not AVG.
In "Add or Remove Programs" it shows AVG Protection installed, version 2016.121.7859. I thought I had AVG Free 2014. Also, in Add/Remove programs, there is a change and a remove buttton. I tried clicking the change button and it brought up an VG installation page. I stopped the installation because it AVG is already installed.
How can I update AVG? As I mentioned, the usual AVG icon is gone from the screen, replaced by the shield.

Just for the future, the trick is to Save downloads as files rather than Run them in the browser. That way you can keep the original download and double click it at some later date to install it again.

Here are some old AVG versions:

That installation would overwrite your existing AVG, giving you a new, clean install with the latest version. (even if a virus changed some settings)

I suggest you try that next, since it will probably be the least time consuming action ;)

The Security Center shows I have automatic updates checked, and I had AVG Free 2014 for a couple years and it always updated automatically, so why didn't it update now? I have AVG Free 2016 on my laptop (I'm using my desktop for this) and 2016 isn't as comprehensive as 2014. 2014 Free included the Tune-Up feature and a few other features not available in 2016 Free. To get the extras with 2016 Free requires a purchase. Is there a site where I could download 2014 again, or update the 2014?
