Windows Vista - Many issues

April 2, 2009 at 13:44:36
Specs: Windows Vista, Home Premium, SP2
I recently encountered a problem when trying to install the new IE8 browser. I recieved an error stating that the sfc.dll was missing and IE would not install. I researched the issue and then tried to replace the sfc.dll file in the system files. This then presented me with another issue, a new error - "The ordinal 7 could not be located in the dynamic link library sfc_os.dll". This occurs when I try to open certain software, usually internet applications. For example windows messenger, windows live mail. However the applications will run.

Windows update will not run and it just hangs the OS or even crashes completely. Windows defender will also not run. I get an error that says "windows defender encountered an error: 0x800700b6. The operating system cannot run %1"

I am concerned that this may indicate I have a trojan. I have ran my Norton Anti-virus software several times and also used the Microsoft Malicious Software Detector.
I read that if Windows update cannot be activated this could be a sign of malicious software running on my machine.

I am running Vista on my home machine that is linked over a wireless connection to the internet.

As you can see there are loads of problems and I just can't seem to understand what is going on. Any help would be much appreciated!
