Joe,

I thank you for understanding but I think the article is 100% BS but that is my opinion. If anyone thinks this article is real you should just go check yourself into your nearest mental health institute.

It did give me a good laugh though.

If you read his posts on the HITB forums, he backs up all/most of his points. He also seems to be a very impressive IT guy. Anyways, I never trusted MS anyways, Thats why I use Mandrake :D

Articles like that always tread a fine line between scraping a premise together and being percieved as complete BS. It's the equivalent of bad tabloid journalism because it's devoid of any real context.

Yes M$ operating systems are certainly built with different levels of internal information retrieval in mind but you'd have to look at that from a tech developement point of view and try to see why any of those features were implemented.

You'd have to evaluate what was a deliberate "add on" after thought, and what was a natural organic development idea.

Then you'd have to listen to M$.

My personal opinion has always been that with M$ operating systems being used in the majority of homes and businesses on the planet, that any government not striking an agreement with the manufacturer to leave some form of in built "backdoor" accountability, simply wouldn't be doing it's job.

If your a government with dependant law enforcement agencies to look after then you sure as hell better be "asking" the largest operating system manufacturer in the world to encompass some form of "looking glass" features into their operating systems.

That's a governments job. They wouldn't be doing it if they didn't.

As far as their concerned an information storage and communication device sat on every desktop that could be potentially used for anything, would need a "looking glass" or two in it, just to even the law enforcement score up.

If you look at it like that from their, a law enforcement point of view, then you can certainly sympathize with it. A planet full of storage devices which can potentially communicate and interconnect, just how do you police it and keep tabs on what's going on ?

Solution if your law enforcement minded is to give your communications intellegince services charge of the internet (NSA/GCHQ) and ask the overwhelming predominant manufacturer of operating systems to be "looking glass" friendly. If any "on the ground" forensics needs to take place, there would be a few avenues for law enforcement to go down.

This isn't rocket science to grasp or bogus conspiracy theory, this is real world answers to real world problems.

Like Tidus says. If you aren't comfortable with this don't purchase a Microsoft operating system, get yourself a 'nix flavour and learn how to use it.

But do have a quick reality check If your going to base your decision making solely on whether M$ comes with looking glass features or not. I can think of a multitude of other reasons I'd put first, ahead of that one, to not use an M$ OS.

This isn't anything to do with Microsoft really.

This is about control. Who controls what.

Microsoft is just a compliant business that probably had a gun held to it's head at some point and probably ended up being more than happy to comply.

"Wow!that article makes you think a little"

Yes (although apparently very little).

Who "no's"?

Still, any article that can reference 'Catch 22' and the Ferengi 'Rules of Acquisition' (in the same sentence) is somewhat noteworthy.

Tech Support: "I need you to boot the computer."

Customer: THUMP! Pause. "No, that didn't help."
