windows shuts down on startup. blue screen

May 16, 2011 at 18:28:52
Specs: Windows xp, 2.8G
I did a restart on my system because it said that Verizon had downloaded updates for my virus software. (from their service). Once I did that windows will start and then go blue with the message that windows shut down to stop possible damage to my hard drive.
Safe mode does not work and I cant/don't know how to start it in dos.
I bought the comaputer online from a reputable dealer, but do not have the windows disc. It runs XP and I also have an external hard drive for backing up files.

See if this works:

Start your computer.
Tap the F8 key before Windows starts, to bring up the Windows Advanced Options menu

Use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (The most recent settings that worked)
Press: Enter

If after several attempts you are unable to get into the XP Windows Advanced Options Menu, as the computer is booting into Windows, turn it off pressing the on/off button on the computer case for about 4 to 5 seconds.

Now, turn the computer on, once again.
Windows should notice that the computer did not successfully boot the last time, and show the Windows Advanced Options Menu.

From the Windows Advanced Options Menu, select the Last known good configuration. (Highlight and press Enter to load)

The computer should restart and load into Windows.

Let us know how it goes.

Still no go. When trying to restore last known good configuration, the same thing happens on restart.
