Subject: Windows Media Player Codec VirusOS: Windows XP ProCPU/Ram: 1 GB DDRModel/Manufacturer: Homemade |
Comment: Help!!!! My little brother was looking at those stupid porn sites and clicked on a link to download a Windows Media Player Codec to watch one of them. He said it started getting really slow. Then the Windows Security alert thing stopped everything and whenever you open up a page it comes up. What it says is that my computer has been infected and that whenever I open up a .exe file it is copying my passwords and things. Ad-Aware didn't detect anything and neither did Norton Anti-Virus. I downloaded the scan version of SpyQuake and PestTrap and both detected like 49 threats. Can somebody please help?

Reply: (edit)the problem with spyware removal programs that you never hear of is that they will turn up false positives, possibly to scare you into buying the software so that it can fix it for you. Is it a webpage that is popping up every time you open a page? the only absolutely reliable malware detection program is Hijackthis. I think perhaps something took over IE. download Hijackthis at the link below. run it and have it save a log. post the log here. I can read it, or if I don't get round to it, someone else will be able to. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Reply: (edit)If you request a log, you are expected to analyze it - that's the whole point of "logs by request only" False positives are possible for any type of scan, but it's well known that the sleazier outfits will find imaginary problems that other applications 'miss' & miraculously fix them. SpyQuake & Pesttrap made the rogues' gallery and cannot be recommended Uninstall those garbage programs, there are plenty of legitimate, effective alternatives We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Reply: (edit)you dont have a codec virus. what you have is a trojan virus called spyquake. its fake. spyquake is not real spyware removal software, its a scam to get you to download the fake software and pay for it. i had the same thing. its pretty vicious. ive done some research and there are a lot of sites that claim to have a tool that will remove it automatically but symantic, norton, pccillin, and windows defender cant detect it and remove it so i dont really trust non brand name removal software. in my opinion the best and safest way to remove it is to low level format the hard drive and redo the whole system. spyquake buries itself in so many temp files and registry keys its just not worth the risk.
