I am trying to fix a problem, for a friend, but I am having some problems.

Whenever she logs onto MSN Messanger, it tries to send a file to other users. This is rather straight-forward, and it seemed like it would be easy enough to fix. However, when I run a virus scan, it comes up clean, and when I open MSCONFIG, it crashes down. Also, if I search for programs such as 'HIJACKTHIS' on Google, Firefox closes. The same goes with running the file.

My current plan is to restart into safe mode, run HIJACKTHIS, Save the log, and send it back to the other PC for further analysis. However, I'm rather stumped as to whether or not anything will come up, and how I would go about removing it from the registry, and start up.

Any tips?

go into safe mode with networking and remove all start-up entries using msconfig.
Also, There are some great free programs in the red link to run for cleaning up your PC. I would suggest running them.

I am not a fan of msn messenger or any messenging programs as they are more problems than anything else.

If you do run HJT in safe mode, then paste results in to:
http://hijackthis.de/
Then I would google the results and delete the problems that are safe for delete. Good Luck
