Hi. Badboy suggested I post this in this forum.

I have a folder, C:\WINDOWS, that is 4.84 gig, contains 17,220 files and 857 folders.

3.8 gig of the folder is made up of 820 files with no extensions, are called type "file", are named seemingly random 8 character alpha names (ie Akakblfd), range in size from 0 to 10,441 meg, are created on an almost daily basis, and there are up to 15 or so multiples of them of the exact same size.

They are not hidden and are taking over my hard drive. The earliest one currently in the folder was created 9/06/2002, the last 11/29/2002.

My system is clean per Norton Anti-virus.
Can anyone 'splain this to me, and help me?

Thanks. Jeff.

Start with a the trojan scan at the PC Flank website. If it is positive, then download and install one of the highly recommended antitrojan programs from that site for a free trial (Trojan Remover, Trojan Hunter, Tauscan, TDS) are all good at detecting and cleaning a trojan. What firewall do you have installed? If the answer is none, then get Sygate at that website too! Take care and all the best!

i think after the trojan scan you should boot into DOS and the full scan disk ... to test your disk sectors

Ok. Right clicked on each drive and scanned with TDS - 3 on it's default settings.
Here are the results for the suspicious files.

For C drive:
Scan Control Dumped @ 08:42:00 04-12-02
Suspicious Filename: Excessive space characters
File: c:\windows\favorites\bookmarks folder\tech folder\overclocking\icrontic - pure hardware bliss.                                                .url (note: I have removed the excessive spaces)

And for D drive:

Scan Control Dumped @ 09:48:34 04-12-02
Positive identification (embedded in file): Keylog.HotKeysHook (dll) (Possible Keylog DLL)
File: d:\program files\warcraft iii\war3maphack102\war3maphack102.exe (note: this is my kids' file they got way after my problem started)

Anything there to worry about? What next?

Thanks again. Jeff.

Final resolution was I deleted all the phantom files after moving them to D drive for a couple of days. No problems yet.

Discussed further here http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/133073.html

Thanks again all!!

Jeff.
