Has MS pulled Windows Defender?? I'm getting "Not Available" trying to download it. I downloaded it a few weeks ago and had problems installing/updating. Had time to spare this afternoon and thought I'd try it again.

JohnO,

Where, where are you trying to download it?? Just to verify MS download center, I downloaded it. Had no problems downloading 'windows defender (beta2)'. [Defender (beta2) page I used to test]

Ray meant validation test on your PC to verify that you are running genuine Windows. If you fail it you're cut off.

I'll take these posts in order (backwards). I don't know when JohnZ will appear (I've got a friend named John Ziegler but he has no computer, LOL). However, this JohnO has been on this site since the early Win98 days. Yes, my Windows passed the validation test as usual. On 2 different MS pages taken from Google, I got the not available msg. I found another MS page and downloaded it. Just checked the other links on Google, and they now go to the good page.

HOWEVER, I get the same error I was getting the last time I installed it. When I try to update the definitions, I get a box saying: "0x8007064c Installation source for this product is not available". I have tried using the RUN box to delete old definitions, but it asks me for a CD. All kinds of posts concerning this error and other problems with the program if you search Google. I'll mess with it a little more, but will probably end up uninstalling and sticking with the old reliables. Thanks

Wanted to ask-- XPUser, you've been around forever; how many unoriginal people are (not quite) plagiarizing your name?

I too had error messages from Defender when I tried to update it.

Turns out I had to apply the Root Certificates update. It is listed as optional, not a high priority update.

Once I did that, Defender updated, no problem.

Thanks for the reply, DanJ. I've uninstalled it. Too many good effective programs around that update and run without all the BS. I think Bill should stick to charities. BTW, I like your name-IT'S original, stick with it, LOL. Well, back to the Chevy truck forums. Oh, I use JohnO on some of them also.
