well i have a similar problem... when i try to run any program it says "windows cannot find (file path). Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search."
this is the message i get when i try to use just about anything.... its really annoying me can someone please help.... also my viruscan detected something right before it started called winamppw.exe or something like that... please help

It sounds like you are infected with Backdoor.OptixPro.10 or Backdoor.OptixPro.12
Go here and download and run the Exe file association fix. http://www.dougknox.com.
In the left hand pane click WinXP fixes, then in the main window click File association fixes.
Then download 'Hijack This!'. Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply.

Run HT again and check this entry and click fix checked. Reboot after.

I have the same problem as mark and I did the same as what tom41 says, however My problem hasn't been fixed. Is there anything else that I can do to try to fix my problem. Here is my Log.

Bless you Tom41!!! I have 2 dell computers, a desktop and a laptop, and 1 computer I built myself. All machines gave me this problem where I couldn't access any programs after I installed Norton Antivirus. Since I didn't know what was going on and couldn't access anything, I ended up having to fresh install the OS and all my programs on the dell machines, and was about to on the third one until I found this board. If it wasn't for this board, I would be spending the next 6 hours reinstalling the OS and all my programs right now!

I can no longer open excel or word files by double clicking on the file itself. I have to open the appropriate program and then select the file using the open file command.
How should I fix this? Any help appreciated.

I'm trying to fix a friends computer and they seem to have the same problem that is described on this site - but nothing is working. I can't run any programs or anything. The machine won't run ANY *.exe - so therefore I can't run regedit to load the regfix or even the hijack this utility.
What do you suggest, besides a total re-install?
