Subject: Win32.HLLW.Medbod need QuarantinedOS: windows xp home editionCPU/Ram: n/aModel/Manufacturer: n/a |
Comment: My recent computer threat scan showed this file INFECTED and placed it automatically in quarantine THIS IS THE FILE: Win32.HLLW.Medbod - What is it and does it need to remain in quarantine or not? this is what it actually said: c:\documents and settings\all users\documents\setup.exe._eac_qt_ is infected with Win32.HLLW.Medbod.....??? What, where, how? any help appreciated please....I even went into my system to find the file to get its properties but since it is quarantined I would have to remove it from quarantine to view properties so CAN YOU HELP? I don't want to FREE it until I have some idea of what it is. THANKS.....(my online searches for it did not come up with anything and as usual I came back here to get the answer as always).......THANKS

Reply: (edit)Why would you want to 'FREE it'? Delete and forget about it - it's apparently an infected setup file downloaded from how-and-who-knows-where, and not worth the DRAMA Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie!'... till you can find a rock

Reply: (edit)Thank you for the RESPONSE/HELP and I apologize for any DRAMA; recent DEATH OF HUSBAND apparently still clouds my judgement at times. When a heuristic search is done a file can match patterns of viruses but are not always 'true' - I was just unsure on this file for I have not seen HLLW.Medbod file on any lists so I just asked. Thanks again.....

Reply: (edit) Delete the file/s from your quarantine folder then boot into safe mode and re scan your system To get into safe mode, Restart your computer. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a menu. When you have the menu on the screen. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode When you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode
If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer " Please Post back to let us know if we helped "

Reply: (edit)My condolences over your recent loss - still (whenever possible) it's usually best just to focus on the immediate problem, and refrain from excessive capitalization or other stylistic distractions. As a result of being quarantined the file was also renamed - only 'executable' files can cause harm (and only when they're, well, executed) so the original file name was likely "setup.exe" - a very common name for a 'setup' file, and not something essential to the normal operation of Windows. It's good to be vigilant, but there's no real reason to take a chance on any suspicious file found - most Windows or other needed program files can be easily replaced if necessary. Reply: (edit)I realize it was renamed after quarantined (eac identified and renamed it then placed it in the eac_qt file/folder); I did delete the file Bob (by BigBob) - followed the instructions you gave and you are right about System Restore. jboy, thank you for the reminder that most Windows or other needed program files can be easily replaced - so true. When I have files quarantined I do delete them but I like to try to identify them also(know the what, when and where); this was the first item I could not identify and place in my personal database and I just wondered if anyone could help me identify the infection. (jboy - sorry for the typing drama; I did not realize it at the time and I have been a bit over-vigilant lately; I need to settle down). I still wish the infection could be identified.....by the way jboy, I enjoyed viewing your homepage. Thanks to jboy and Bob(by BigBob) - all is well.
