I'm going from dial-up to DSL, with the same company. Will I appear as the same critter when I connect with a distant server now, or will my identity change?
Also, are there other security concerns or differences to be aware of?
Thanks very much?

hello
your isp will see your mac addy on your modem and thats what will allow you in. plus it goes through a hand shake after its seen it than your in.
not a big deal.••• Resistance is invigorating!••• kill spyware

I didn't state my question well.
If I dial into www.snot.net (or whatever) right now, to check the snot index, it will see me as a certain #, right?
If I change to DSL with the same ISP company I have now for dial up, will snot.net still see me as the same character when I connect to them?
=======
Sorry, I don't know what a 'mac addy ' is.Thanks

You will most likely have a different IP address, yes.
As far as security, consider getting a hardware firewall. A cheap broadband router will work just fine for this.

Look for the $20 - $40 range onsale, think about if you will be making a home network in the future to share this BB Internet connection and consider a unit with that in-mind as well.

I wish they cost that much :) here in aus most real "broadband" routers go for $130+,
They are a good idea tho, but failing that (if you just get the modem with no firewall features) a good software firewall is a must
If you have some old hardware laying around you can make your own firewall

The going rate for a:
"Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast 4-Port Cable/DSL Router"
is $80 CAD, which is about $65 USD. There's a couple in stock nearby.

..and while I'm at it, should I continue to run my software firewall after installing the router?

A router is an Ethernet device outside your system box, between the Cable/DSL modem and your system, so version of OS does not matter.
If you already have a software firewall installed, make sure it is up to date. If it is, then the additional security of a firewall router is not necessary, but still advisable.
You will have to add a Ethernet adapter to your system if you do not have one. (Don't get sucked into the "cheap" connection of using a USB port for connecting the Cable/DSL modem to your system as the USB connection does not allow for a router or sharing an Internet connection.) If you do have to go with the USB connection, them make sure your firewall software is working.
