Why is there a fly buzzing sound on my PC?

November 10, 2010 at 12:08:43
Specs: Windows XP, pentium 2.5ghz/1gb
To be clear; It only happens when speakers are on & is a sample of a fly / bee buzzing therefore it's coming off the soundcard, not a mechanical fault with fan or some such problem. It comes and goes intermittently. I guess this is a virus type problem. Does anyone know how to get rid of it?

Try replacing your cables or use headphones for a while and see if you get the same sound coming out. This way you can at least try some minor trouble shooting and weed out the issue a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions but I kid you not! I have worked as a sound engineer. It is definitely the sound of a buzzing fly - sounds as if it comes into the room getting louder as it gets closer, buzzes around for a few seconds then fades away. Just like a wildlife recording. It has infected (or insected ; ) 2 computers on our home network. The sound can be heard on all the speakers & headphones in 2 different rooms with different amplifiers - cables, computer fans etc etc work perfectly ok.
It has not been happening for long (2 weeks?) & is very intermittent so at present I would say it only occurs when we are online.. ps I am not crazy!

Hi, no solution yet but it hasn't happened for a few days now (famous last words) so maybe it is some kind of "harmless" virus / worm made up by a hacker prankster? I'm no computer expert so I use these words without really understanding! My computer still works ok so far & about to do a scan / security check up etc. to see if anything crops up. will comment if anything does.

I have the same fly sound. It is intermitent and only when on line. It occurs both on internet explorer and on Firefox as a browser. I am sure it is a virus. I have run CCleaner and another cleaner but it is still ther - any answers anyone.

Hi, This is really strange. My new pc started buzzing a week ago. Initially I thought it was one of the children messing about. But it has just happened again...twice in minutes. The funny thing is that I'm on the other side of the atlantic in Manchester England. Has anybody found anything about it yet!!!!

I get this, in Firefox and other browsers, and usually when I am browsing Ebay with my speakers on.

PROBLEM SOLVED, I think; It's a darned sidebar advertisement in Ebay (possibly other sites too!) to do with the University of Northampton who have a honey bee as their logo, or are something to do with research into bees.

PLEASE dont change settings or re-install windows etc... it's perfectly safe though annoying and intrusive. I just turn my speakers down!

Thanks GC, as it still hasn't re-occured (I do use my pc with amp off at times) then you could be right. I will check the sidebar ads nxt time - there is a good chance it happened when we were on ebay. tho' couldn't swear to it. As the pcs work fine otherwise, we had decided it was harmless. Clearly the noise did not draw attention to the ads!

Hi I've got exactly the same frustrating problem - it's exactly as you described it - I though my young daughter had left a program open - 1st noticed it a couple of weeks ago, turned the sound down - evetually done a system reset - the sound started again today - any updates as to how you can fix it.

Graham - you beauty! Right down the bottom of the screen on eBay as you said. I've complained to University about the problems this irritating ad is causing. Thanks again!
