Reply: (edit)Looking at all the processes you have running it's no wonder it's slow. Try removing some of the programs you have the "load at startup" feature turned on. Delete all entries in your prefetch directory and defrag your drive. This would be a good start.

Reply: (edit)I've tried disabling all the startup programs in msconfig, but that doesn't help. I have also defragmented the hard drive and have udes Norton Syatem Works to make sure there are no errors. Also, this isnt a problem that has built up over time. The computer has always worked fine and suddenly started running like this. Any other ideas?

Reply: (edit)If you hit ctl-alt-del are there any processes that are using a high percentage of the CPU? If so see if killing that process helps. If so that could be your culprit. Also notice that you do have a few processes running twice. As a quick check try ending items that are there twice (with the exception of svchost.exe) Go to Msconfig and uncheck any duplicate processes you see loading at startup.

Reply: (edit)I see the list of stuff there and although most of it is a jumble to me, I can tell you the versions of McAfee I have run have killed my computer, causing Windows Media Player, for instance, to take 5 seconds to open instead of a quarter or half second (Celeron 1.2 Ghz). Disabled McAfee, boom, back to normal. Turned it back on, slow again. I checked every setting I knew how to in McAfee to make it scan more and less securely and it was always slow under any setting. The latest version doesn't seem to do that. People I know who have Norton don't have this problem and I get to use their systems sometimes. I am using another solution that is locking up periodically with some recent update it did. No issues I have run across with Norton (I rely on my in-laws or my brother at his work to call and ask about problems and they haven't) and possibly the latest version of McAfee which is on the computer I am using that finally does not exhibit this behavior. To test, right click your McAfee icon(s), close or disable everything, test your system, if it works, there you go, if not, turn it back on and keep looking. Turn it back on in either case until you have a more satisfactory solution as you really need to be running something to protect you and McAfee does a great job of that. I see people all the time that run with no protection on high speed internet connections and I just shake my head. Thank goodness their ISPs have set them up for NAT at least. I actually found this post searching for references of McAfee causing computers to be slow even if the latest version was used and this is the third forum I have come across where people are trying to troubleshoot a slow computer and McAfee is one of the things I see on the list running in the background. No answers yet as to if it does, just 3 coincidental hits for people troubleshooting the same problem with one thing in common running in the background. Good luck. Just came across another possibility. See something Microsoft calls the Q811493 hotfix in Windows XP. Found other hot fixes that could affect XP, too. Slow McAfee was my search in google to find all of this. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-013.asp
