I have Norton antivirus but i have heard complaints about it so i was wondering who has the best antivirus Norton or McAffe.Thanx ,i always trust the peoples opinions here.

I would recommend you get eTrust Anti-virus. It's a small program, frequent updates (sometimes several a day) and I've never had a problem with it. I've found it very efficient, and have never had a virus. I've been using it for about two years. Norton and McAfee are way to bloated and obtrusive IMHO.

I use mcafee av and havn't had too many problems with it. The automatic email scanner freezes up incomming email if it has virus and the email download will give errors so I cannot recieve any email so I have email scanning shut off and scan any email attachments manually...seems to be better at clean up than norton but norton seems to be better at initial detection. I have used both. I find norton uses more resorces than mcafee.
Mcafee cleans out the registry entries of infections while norton does not. Norton has much better removal instructions on their website than mcafee.
Mcafee is terrible at finding viruses in zip files until you unzip them.
I think every antivirus program has it's weak points and if I figure I need another opinion on a file...I go online to rav antivirus or housecall for second opinion.
I know all that does not help much but just a few things I found with both programs...I have not accidently infected myself...I have done it on purpose to see how either program reacts and how they handle the infection...many times I opt for manual removal when removing bugs from someones system including mine.
I have also tried panda antivirus and tested it out with an infected floppy that was write protected. Panda found the virus but claimed to have renamed the file to render it useless which is not possible with a write protected floppy! Checked the floppy on another machine and the file name was not changed (or cleaned, deleted) I have installed AVG on several machines and it seems pretty good on resorces, detection, but dumb when it comes to actually removing an infection. (meaning the virus was run)
As I'm sure you know..no antivirus program is any good unless kept up to date.
Hope that helps a little on decision making.Have a Good New Year!

I agree with Blender.
No a/v program is perfect.
The "best" for you depends on what you are looking for. Here are two a/v programs that I have used lately.
Kaspersky Personal 4.5.
This is a very good a/v program.
Updates are available daily and you can configure KAV if resource usage is an issue.
It may be a bit pricey for some.Cost was around $49 when I registered the program.Dr.Web for Workstations.
I like this a/v also.
This program has a fast scanner and uses little resources.
Spider Mail scans mail, even in Outlook Express accounts.
Updates have been daily.
Cost is just under $30.
I like the strong heuristics, but I don't mind investigating any possible false positives that may occur with Dr.Web's heuristics. The best way to find what is best for you is to trial some a/v's one at a time until you find a program that fits what you want or need.
HTH,
JB.

I am using Solo Antivirus. It works great on my Windows 98 machine. I am very satisfied with Solo online protection. It uses very little resources, fast and updates automatically. You can try it.

Norton AntiVirus is the best AV on earth. The most important feature of an anti virus is its detection capabilities..I Assure you that these New AVs will not detect highly complex and polymorphic viruses and/or it might take the staff weeks or months to find a solution for it(depending on the viruse's complexity)...Norton Antivirus Has proved to be one of the best AntiViruses so far...Even a schoolboy can find the viruse's signature and scan for files...The problem arises when the virus encrypts its code
Best Regards

Norton and PandaSoftware.com are good. Panda has daily updates which means you are protected daily. Norton updates usally on every Wednesday which means you are protected weekly.
I scanned my box with norton and it found no virii. I had the settings maxed out to scan EVERYTHING.
I installed Panda and it finds 3 virii instantly! Norton missed them... Panda has a FAST scan for the entire system. Can scan .zip files as well.
Panda also has ability to werk with email programs too.Panda uses little resources and does not slow down machine. Does not slow bootup and does not slow shutdown.
Norton is Bloat-Ware. TOO many resources. Slows down machine. Slows down bootup and boot down.
I have found that AVG sucks, F-Secure sucks as well. Panda, and Norton are my picks. My machine is rather old , so a anti-virus program that is fast , effecient, and uses lil resources is what i look for... not to forget a kick ass virus detection engine!
My machine consists of:
Self Built
800MHz P3
400 MB RAM (approx)
XP PROSo you can see i have an average machine and yet PANDA kicks bloody ass!
I have been using Panda ever since.. about a year now. They have a built in firewall in the Platinum edition too, not to shabby either. It is pretty self maintained. I did a port scan on my computer from my laptop, and panda poped up a lil MSN Messenger style popup window and told me that i was being port scanned by IP adress xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and that IP will be blocked for 15 minutes. It is blocked for 15 minutes cause that IP that was blocked might have been another computer of yours trying to do a daily backup and Panda just got confused for some reason...So after 15 minutes.. your other machine can perform its backup properly. All in all... i HIGHLY recommend PANDA. It doesnt matter what version you get of PANDA. There are diff packages available. I bought the Platinum edition which is for a home user to a home power user and it has a built in firewall. I decided that i still prefer 2 other firewalls though. So i turned off PANDA's firewall and either use Zone Alarm PRO , or TINY's FIREWALL. TINY is sick!... Has a built in IDS too! IDS = Intrusion Detection System. But TIny is VERY secure so it asks you about EVERYTHING and can be VERY annoying.. kinda annoying like BLACK ICE FIREWALL. So stick with PANDA and Zone Alarm Pro and you should be fine. Or if you are a computer security freek like me... just cut the CAT6 with a pair of scissors each night!
Best of luck to you all.

After many personall tests the result is:
Norton Antivirus is very bad.He is capable to see only 60000 viruses from over 100000 in the wild.(Ex.Norton doesen't see Win Crash,Win95.Cih.rest,Plugin downloader, any many keylogers.Unfortunatly is the best buy!?
The best antivirus is without discusion McAfee(but is hard to configure for the best results, and dosen't scan zip, compressed files,fake-file.)
The best result you can get only if you are using minimum 3 antivirus product on your system.
I use Bitdefender because I know the intelectual capacity of roumanians(they are 50% of Microsoft progamators),in passive mode,as well Rav Antivirus(roumanians product),and Norton in active mode(with autoprotection enable),only for his great realtime scaner....The combination of those is the death of any virus!!!!

I do not recommend Norton or McAfee because they are so bloated, slow and unstable. My favorite AV scanner has to be Sophos AV (www.sophos.com). It is updated within the hour that the AV researchers find a new virus! It also has the largest known virus detection database, currently detecting over 87445 (dated 29/01/04). Comparing this with Norton, which only detects 64905 viruses and kaspersky which detects 80998, we can clearly see how bad norton's detection is compared with other competing products.
I do not recommend Norton AV!
