I like ZONE ALARM.
Norton is known to use lots of resources.
Have heard a lot of good things about SYGATE.

Zone Alarm Pro is not too bad..
Norton, is a sucker for resources as mentioned above.

Never used Sygate, but i've never heard one bad thing about it...

Sygate is a firewall.
Norton is bloatware.

Sygate is free.
Norton thinks you should pay to slow down your machine.

NO Contest.

hi merlin,
sygate free is one of the best on record.
norton, like its anti-trojan is expensive and as tinkerbong says"Norton is bloatware, Norton thinks you should pay to slow down your machine."
if anything get sygate free or try any other of the fine free firewalls available such as kerio, tiny, outpost, look n stop lite, and zone alarm. for more info on firewalls go to www.thepublicworks.com security section, lots of info there.
all the best,
murve

I use KERIO Personal Firewall and I think it is
one of the best. It is real light on it's feet.
And as for systems resources it take up all
most zip,Not like ZoneAlarm does... I have used
Sygate in the past and it is also very good
for my second choice...

Hi all,
I would go to
www.grc.com

and read the reviews and tests of the various firewalls. Really an eyeopener!!
Both versions of Zonealarm ( free vs PRO ) win hands down.
While there run the "SHIELDS UP" tests and see where your firewall might be weak.

Just my thoughts,
XDon

I would have to disagree with that.
I just did the test and Kerio past everything
that Zonealarm did. Plus Zonealarm is a systems resource HOG.. Not like Kerio....
Check for your self...

ghostman then you don't have zonealarm configured correctly plus there is an update that will correct most of the errors that you would have had with the older one. i have tested zonealarm on my network and im not going to tell you how. if you want to know more email me. trust me im not a novice at all. :) happy security auditing

JON,
I guess you didn't here me,I don't use ZoneAlarm... I use Kerio Personal Firewall.
ZoneAlarm In My Opinion does not stand up against Kerio... Just do a systems resources
test to see....

Ghostman, don't you get it? ZA is not a hog when it comes to system resources You might have it incorrectly configured. (I mean that you must have used it when you tried the sys. res. test, or otherwise it was futile ;)

I made a research lately about firewalls and
not the free editions ofcourse.
Zone Alarm 3 Pro is a good firewall for those
that don't have the technical background to understand security issues. Although there is an option that asks how well informed you are, still the details are insufficient about a possible intrusion. It's one of the best defenders and with a really nice interface but it only for home usage.

On the other hand there is Sygate Firewall 5
Pro with not such a great interface and ease of use but with more detailed infos and a stealth mode unsurpassed than any other commercial firewall. The backtrace is quite effective and usuful as well.

Concerning the Norton firewall now. For someone that doesn't have a clue about net attacks and is a novice but wants to feel more confortable on the net is a good choice. If for instance he had Zonealarm 3 and there is a warning about a possible attack ; he might just disconnect in panic.
Keep in mind that Norton's capabilities that other firewalls don't have are cookie control, enable-disable Active X/Java, script control etc.

The choice is a matter of who you are and what you want from a firewall.

Correction:
-----------

Actually Zone Alarm 3 Pro has a script, cookie and ad control. The previous version didn't had any (Zone alarm 2.6).

Sorry!
