Which free firewall?

June 17, 2009 at 03:15:27
Specs: Windows XP, 2Gb
Ok, wondering what is the best free firewall out there to use.
I used to use xonealarm but it had a driver which kept causing my system to crash BSOD so can't use that.
I tried Sygate but it kept intermittently dropping my wireless connection and preventing me from reconnecting + it's not supported anymore.
ANy others?
I have Windows XP firewall installed but don't believe it's very good. It doesn't stop outgoing traffic.

Ok. heres a bit of information.

People often use AVG. But if you get a completly clean computer & install AVG, it can sometimes mysteriously find a virus ....

Yeah, sometimes it makes viruses up to make it look better.
Also, if a new connection is made through the firewall like if your about to download something.. AVG will most likely not do anything..

The best one i prefer is Comodo. It's completely free...
This is what is included with Comodo
FREE Comodo AntiVirus
FREE Comodo Firewall
FREE Comodo Internet Security
FREE Website Authentication
FREE Email Security Certificate
FREE Comodo SecureEmail

It's really good, any connection made it will detect it & ask you if you want to block or allow it, sometimes this can get annoying, but it's really secure.

I've got some virus's on my laptop, & non of them now work because comodo blocked them.
It's seriously worth a try to see whether you like it.

Hi
I uninstalled Sygate but it keeps starting up again. ANy ideas how to get rid of it? I tried this but access denied:

To be sure you have a clean uninstall and reinstall of SPF please do the following.
First uninstall SPF via the uninstall wizard then reboot. Then once up please do the fallowing.

Click "Start" >> "Run" and type "regedit"; Now locate and delete the following folders if found: (Please note: if you do not find any of these that is fine you just want to be sure that there are no conflicts and that you get a clean install)

For 95/98 & ME:
HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\winsock2\wps
HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\sygate technologies, Inc.\Sygate Personal Firewall

Now run a system search (start> find files and folders) and remove the following.
“Teefer.vxd” (windows\system\teefer.vxd)
“Wps.dll” (windows\system\wps.dll)

For NT & 2000/XP:
HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\winsock2\wps
HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\sygate technologies, Inc.\Sygate Personal Firewall
HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\service\ smcservice
HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\service\ teefer

Now run a system search (start> find files and folders) and remove the following.
“Teefer.sys” (winNT\system32\drivers\teefer.sys)
“Wps.dll” (winNT\system32\wps.dll)

Then reboot. Once back up disable all security (Please note: if running XP please be sure you have disabled it built-in firewall ICF) and anti virus software and reinstall SPF.

Please Note: When dealing with the system registry you will need to be careful so only remove the listed folders as they relate to Sygate and SPF.
