Hey everyone,

Does anyone know of a place where people can paste their Hijack This logs to be analyzed? Better yet, are any knowledgeable people here willing to help me?
Im working on my fam's computer, and it seems all virused up. My logs seem to have all sorts of junk, and Im not very good at determining what is safe to remove. I want to perform as many steps as possible to save this thing before I have to resort to formatting it. Help? Let me know. thanks in advance for all the help.

Pete

Ok Guys. Thanks for the suggestions I shall check them out.
Now I have a question if you don't mind?
My computer restarts during any type of virus scan. Ive tried... norton, AVG, Trendmicro housecall, Avast, Panda Active scan...
I am positive there are a bunch of viruses on the comp because these various virus scans show infected files, but shut the computer down before they're able to finish.
Ive tried many things to start cleaning. Ive used: adaware, spybot, hijack this, cwshredder, mcaffee stinger, the cleaner, trojan removers... As you can see a whole bunch of crap.
I had a sasser and I used the removal tool and I haven't been able to mess with it too much due to lack of time.
But what is the best way to go about trying to clear up this infected annoyance?
Thanks again everyone.

In addition to possible security threats, your computer may be experiencing program conflicts because you have many antivirus and anti-trackware programs installed.

I just don't understand why so many people advocate others to install hijackthis and other software yet neglect to inform that users will need to invest time to learn to read the Log to remove files, or that "experts" may not always answer your posted log? What purpose do these software programs serve if they won't run to completion, resolve your software problems without assistance, or if you haven't learned to use them? Anyways, I will stop my editorial.

I'd stick to the basics as advocated by Microsoft - update and run antivirus and update and install Microsoft critical updates and product updates, (and install firewall- XP has one), and I have no critical security threats or system problem so far. I personally only use Ad-aware from Lavasoft and two antivirus - Trendmicro and Norton's free scans. Any malware cannot be removed by Ad-aware or the antivirus programs, I remove them manually as instructed by the vendor. The manual removal procedures are mostly universal with some variations and much simplier to do and expedient than waiting for someone to read and respond to a posted hijackthis log.

In your case, you will need to update and run you antivirus programs to completion so they will identify the type of infections and remove them for you automatically, and if they cannot be removed automatically, you can remove them manually by looking up the virus encyclopedia of the antivirus vendor's website.

I suggest you consider the following steps:

1. Install antivirus in Safe Mode to avoid program conflict. However, check with vendors for instructions because some antivirus should not be installed in Safe Mode. Actually in your case, XP cannot install software in Safe Mode, so you should consider doing a clean boot of your computer, log on as administrator, and install your choices of antivirus programs and software. Here is a step-by-step sample for doing a clean boot of XP from Symantec:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/3353489cd5cd08c388256c0e005a96e4/3ad082feb2735e8488256b080019b7d9?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

2. Be more selective with which software are essential for identification and removal purposes (since Trendmicro and Symantec both have good search engines and support documents, you might want to keep these two installed or reinstall them). While I have read program conflict such as antivirus programs not running to completion or other software problems with Spybot, I would keep Ad-aware. Begin with two antivirus and Ad-aware and if you need other tools, you can add them on one at at time after you researched known issues, learn to use them, and still consider them necessary.

3. Clean out your temporary folder, Internet Temporary files, cookie files, and empty Recycle Bin before running Ad-aware and antivirus software.

4. You can search www.support.microsoft.com for "How to perform clean-boot troubleshooting for Windows XP" article if you need detailed troubleshooting steps.

5. Remove any malware files not removed manually as instructed by the antivirus encyclopedia(s).

6. Repeat clean and maintenance routine and run scandisk and defrag. Create a full backup.

7. Run and install Windows security and Product updates. Once all programs are running normally, create a full backup.
