Mine does the same thing I run avg7 free. What I have been doing is going to www.grisoft.com and downloading the file manually on the updates page then by the clock right click and press check for updates. It will ask if you want to update from internet or file. I pick file and point it to the downloaded file. Glad you asked the question because I was wondering if it was my machine.

Just minimize it,wait and/or carry on with other tasks.

You,I,and others have noticed a difference in the connect/download time.

I haven't really researched it due to the fact that the updates always come through within a few minutes...my guess is some kind of server problem or something...certainly not something wrong on your end.

Will do it manually.

Waiting for it does not help, it says 0 download, it is probably a server problem but wanted to make sure.

From Tom:

The subject is the free edition of the AVG antivirus. The guy who wrote this is a consultant. His conclusion: A server overload at Grisoft. My conclusion: NO WAY am I going to get this program.

---------------------------
From the consultant:

So along comes the change to AVG7Free. I duly notify my private clients about the switch, and most of them do the upgrade. However I am now inundated with complaints from said clients that "they have a problem with the internet". After a couple of visits (non-chargeable!) I spotted the common denominator. Having spent a lot of time on this I can state categorically that it is AVG server overload - all the other issues discussed on various websites are (at best) marginal.

AVG's response is that "it is huge demand - 10 million update requests" - which equates to being surprised at the demand for Christmas cards in December. Also this has been going on for 6 weeks with no sign of improvement. This self-same problem occurred last year with V6free, but in that case there were alternative URLs available which eased the problem considerably. Setting up a couple of mirrors is dead easy & costs peanuts, but this time round that facility has been blocked in the “free” version, presumably at the behest of the beancounters.

and do a "find in page" on "wmp" (without the quotes)

Their free server is just overloaded...Here's a work around

Ping www.grisoft.com then edit your host file and add guru.grisoft.com and point it to the ip address that replies to ping...you will now get updates from their regular server.
