i have just had a run-in with a virus which i believe to be a trojan. i downloaded a program and something popped up in the corner immediately about a trojan something or other and disappeared just as quickly. i quickly checked my security log in McAfee and saw it was malware of some sort or another. i found the file that was doing it but try as i might i could not delete it. i also tried ending it's processes in task manager but they also reappeared. i gave in to the virus and restored my system to how it was a few days ago. i found the file then in my trash and promptly shredded the trash bin files and temporary internet files with McCafee shredder. this is my first and only experience with a virus. some of the immediate symptoms were

1. a different homepage
2. popups
3. internet explorer processes that went on without any connection to the internet (i mean i saw them in task manager)
4. up to about four files that were undeleatable called Dumbantbin, Bittorrentdownlaoder, mp3playaz

i really want to kno if the virus could come back, if so wut to do, and if i handled the situation properly

thanks!

i don't need no stinking 8 key

I believe you handled it very well. The only thing I would suggest is next time turn off System Restore while doing the virus scan.

Just to be certain you could try scanning your computer one more time at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/. If nothing shows up there you should be ok.

There's no way to be sure if it will come back or not unless you know exactly where it came from and are able to avoid it.

All in all you did well :) Cheers!
