Subject: what is the purpose of msiexec.exe?OS: windows 2000CPU/Ram: 2.66/1g |
Comment: Hello, I am just trying to figure out how things work. my company is doing an upgrade on McAfee 7.1 to 8.0 on the client side, but only half of the machine too the upgrade. the one that did not took we had to run the c:\winnt\system32\msiexec.exe /regserver on the client machine. My questions is this: what would cause this and what is the purpose of this msiexec and how can I prevent this from happening again when we are doing another upgrade. anyone familiar with macafee or windows would be appreciated..thanks, Rock..

Reply: (edit)The application msiexec.exe is the main executable for the Windows Installer service. It must be running for .msi installer packages to work at all. The /regserver switch simply reinstalls the service and starts it up. I guess the machines in question just hadn't started the service up properly. You may also need the "Application Management" and "DCOM Server Process Launcher" services running. To view the list of services and find out which are running, type services.msn in the Run box. I recommend setting those three services to Automatic: Application Management DCOM Server Process Launcher Windows Installer
