Subject: What is gcm.exe ? OS: XPCPU/Ram: Duron |
Comment: I got the following message from my sygate. "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gcm.exe is trying to connect to [211.33.98.24] using remote port 7000 (AFS3-FILESERVER - file server itself). Do you want to allow this program to access the network?" I look into my windows/system32 but couldn't find this gcm.exe file. So what's going on?

Reply: (edit)I'm don't think so. I have never being to this website before and I have never downloaded the file. What is this file doing in my pc? I do not think that this gcm.exe file is the same file mentioned at the USGC website.

Reply: (edit)Some trojans (such as the one I had recently) generate randomly named .exe files that connect to the net. This makes the usual Google on a suspicious file impossible. Quite clever. My advice would be to take a look at how trojans such as the Korgo virus affect your registry and such. Also, what had you done before you got the message from sygate? If you had downloaded anything dodgy or let your firewall down then you're vulnerable. Good luck.
