Subject: What is favicon IE temp filesOS: Windows MECPU/Ram: Pentium r 111/384 |
Comment: Why is it when I delete the temp files in my temporary iinternet files that “favicon” does not delete? Does it belong to Ad-ware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, HiJackThis, CW Shredder, ZoneAlarm or the winzip programs. I delete the temporary internet files every night and the favicon’s are still there and are slowly getting more. I have 20 of them right now.

Reply: (edit)Hi Tammy, The favicon files are harmless, they are simply icon files for your IE Favourites. If you delete them your favourites will lose that distinct icon which relates to a particular site. NB: I've been trying to find a way to KEEP those favicon files and lose all the other temporary internet files, how did you set it to behave like that? :D ER4S3R.

Reply: (edit)You have to use FavOrg,which is now a "paid for" download...altough I can dig up the link to the/a free version. In order to do it manually, these are the steps you need to take; If the site in question(that you want a FavIcon for) is in your favorites, delete it from your Temporary Internet Files Folder. Then navigate to the Temporary Internet Files Folder, find the entry/FavIcon entry respective to that site.Keep in mind, the Icon shown for that particular website may NOT show the Icon that you expect to see....anyway,Right-Click the entry you wish to save the icon for to a folder that "you" create.I always saved mine to a folder I created in "My Documents" named "FavIcons"...go figure. Anyway, once you've done that, you should be able to right-click on the shortcut(your now IE favorite)select Properties and browse to/change the icon from there. It's a round-about way to do it,but it's the ONLY manual way...and it STILL WON'T STICK.For some reason,IE insists on taking over.

Reply: (edit)May have left out the fact that once you have deleted "said site" from your TIF's,you need to return to that site,by whatever means neccessary, add it to your favorites all over again...then, "navigate to the Temporary Internet Files Folder, find the entry/FavIcon entry respective to that site.Keep in mind, the Icon shown for that particular website may NOT show the Icon that you expect to see....anyway,Right-Click the entry you wish to save the icon for to a folder that "you" create.I always saved mine to a folder I created in "My Documents" named "FavIcons"...go figure." Reply: (edit)I have no clue as to how I have gotten these icons and really no clue as what they are used for. I am quite illiterate with computers. I did a search about these icons and still really don’t know what they are about or how and why I have them. The only thing I have done lately was to buy the ZoneAlarm Pro. Other than that, there isn’t anything special that I have done to get these. I am tired tonight and I have read all the replies here, but still don't quite understand. I do have a young teenager who likes to visit dollsmania a lot. Maybe she is getting these for me?? I am not a web master and have no clue about how to be one, if that is what they are used for. I do know that I can have a web page through my provider if I want one, but I really don’t have the time for this and my internet connection isn’t that good. But I still like to know more about these favicon’s since they are on my computer. Does anyone else have anything to add to inform me what these are and do.

Reply: (edit)Tammy The Favicons behave in exactly the same way as the 'normal' blue IE Icons - they are Web Addresses - Shortcuts to the Site The only reason for them is that some WebMasters like to have a distinctive - easily recognisable Icon You can remove them by going to - IE\Options - General Tab - Temporary Internet Files - Settings - View Files and deleting each one If they are Sites which you have in Favorites then the Favicon will be permanently replaced with the normal blue Icon If they are not in Favorites then they will re-appear each time you visit the same site They do not get emptied when you empty your TIF's and neither do they go if you have set IE to empty TiF's on closure of IE You can set IE to empty TIF's on closure in IE Options - Advanced Tab - Browsing section The Favicons are quite harmless Lesley

Reply: (edit)Well, I think I understand them a little better now. I guess I will leave them there for now, as long as they are harmless. Thanks to all of you for your help.
