What happned? - virus or hacked?

CPU/Ram: Intel 2,8/1 gig

I just got my new computer - one week old.

Iv installed both Norton, and ZoneAlarm.
Installed service packs 1,2,3 and even 4.

also installe numerious updates

Yeastarday, after my Girlfriedn had used it (she swears she didnt open any files, and i belive her - she works with computers), I noticed in windows explorer that all folderds and files where renamed - the new names where very long and used strange chars(like @//?+ etc etc)

I imedittly ran NORTON - who couldnt find C:
I Tried to open a folder - and couldnt - invalied names

The program folder on the start menue was all empty.

when trying to reboot it cant find NTLDR.

I have seen this happen when one or both of the follwing components have died or are failing.

#1 Data cable for the hdd
#2 Ide channel has gone flakey

It's rare an on-board ide will fail, so try with the new cable, you will have to format/reinstall etc.

If that fails move the hdd to the secondary ide channel and redo the format and reinstall.
