hi killatae,
for want of a better explanation:
you go to a casino, sex, or music site and download some pictures, or music, or drop a few dollars, next a legitimate pop-up appears and asks you if you want to sign a digital certificate to download some material, once you say yes to the request an active x component has been placed in your computer with some kind of phone home program... keylogger, remote access program, virus, worm, trojan horse loader.......(.exe, .dll, .pif, .com, .scr, .jpg, .gif, .bat, etc,etc,etc.....) and you've lost possession of your computer!
your machine is now the property of Tom, Dick, and a hundred thousand Harry's who are ready and primed to use your computer and a hundred thousand others without your knowlege and or approval, for some useless criminal activity which they call FUN...
Have a good life, all the best and cheers,
murve

The trojan allows the maker to do just about anything they want with your computer. When they take control your computer is called a bot, since it is now their robot. All passwords, data, system settings, just about anything you can think of can be changed or monitored. Each keystoke you do can be captured. Your sound, screen functions, mouse, you name it can be altered. They can completely control your computer. Using your computer and all the others they have captured they can do a denial of service attack on a server. Gibson Research has a very informative article on the attack done to Steve Gibson's site by a teenage boy. If you think you have one and you do not know what to do get back immediately for additional help and solutions. Take care!

Trojans can do anything from simply changing your browsers home site, to DoS attacks (denial of service)to other vulnerable computer and to the most dangerous....RAT's (remote access trojans). Some turn your computer into what is called a Zombie or "BOT" in which your computer is a pawn in an effort with hundreds of other computers to bring down servers or websites. These are particularly annoying since you most likely wont even notice its doing it. ESPECIALLY IF YOU RUN WINDOWS XP. Boy, do those hackers ever love running those BOT on XP. XP has so many resources that the release of Windows XP instantly it became a hackers paradise. Dont be scared though. Just download all the security patches, get a firewall (i recommend Zapro 3) and if you know how to shut down your computers "remote networking" resources through "services.msc"......(not "msconfig") shut them down!
