Greetings. I'm looking for an anti-virus program that suits my needs. I don't really use e-mail so I don't need constant scanning. I also don't want something that runs in the background constantly like McAfee or Norton. I know you can disable most of those features but I never know if I get them all. I rarely scan files but it's nice to have some AV program when necessary. I know all AV programs are as good as long as you keep them updated, so which would be the minimalist's choice? Thanks.
(oh yea, I'm running WindowsXP)

hi vid-gamer,
if you want the best and want to pay, then get Nod32 or Kapersky Labs, they come in 1,2 respectively.
if you want free there's not much choice, so go AVG.
need info then go to wilders.org for info on anti-virus tools.
cheers,
murve

Hi vid gamer. I have AVG 6.0 free edition. But if you follow murve's advice you will find what you need. The products he mentioned are the best.I always check out wilders.org if I'm looking for a security product.I'm running xp also and updates are readily available on AVG.good luck.

ok is this home or pro of windows XP,it depends on this a lot and also depends on how many users are using the computers to be honest i would go for the buck and get norton. a few reasons is because of it's automatic updates. this helps you always stay up to date with the lates viruses with out doing to much. not only that it usually comes preconfigured for propor scanning. a few problems with some of the programs people have recommended. one is both programs don't catch all virus even the ones in the wild. meaning i can create a virus and have it be close to the same code as a recent virus that's out. these won't detect anything like this of course i could always us encryption in the code.

hi funny guys,
you must be talking about norton not being able to catch anything in the wild.
go check out the virus bulletin award website to get more info on norton's strenghts and weeknesses.
cheers,

Murve i've already done my research on virus scanners and keep up to date with them i already know the streaths and weaknesses of them. but AVG does not do well with catching most viruses. first of all most of what i've heard and seen in these post is that they are having to use a second virus scan because AVG did not pick the virus up in the firs place. second of all i would do more research on other prodects as well just a hit of advise from an IS major (information securty)

thought i would post some info about AVG as well as other info. there are two groups that test antivirus software for the government. they have to meet hard standards. this will also give you info about if the product missed viruses in the wild or not as well as how the product did thought i would check out the site you guys had said to wilder.org. doesn't really float my boat as being informational about virus scanners or firewalls for that matter. you might want to check these out.
