I've been having weird problems with my computer lately. I first noticed when my Norton Antivirus was permanently stuck on refreshing and wouldn't allow me to change settings or scan. I decided to try a system restore, but if I can actually get it to come up it only comes up blank. It's the same way in safe mode.
Other programs that won't work: Windows search, and Windows Media Player.

I tried A-Squared trial which found no viruses, and no spyware. Currently I am running avast (which has a few problems since I haven't been able to completely remove Norton) and ZoneAlarm (which seems to be working fine.)

Any suggestions?

use the norton uninstaller from their homepage:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...
Then use regcleaner:
http://majorgeeks.com/download460.html
and remove any instances of norton and symatec
Then Download a new version of Avast to your desktop, uninstall the old one and re-install Avast and allow it to do a bootscan on reboot and move everything it finds to the chest

My Norton was 2002, and they don't have that on there. I already uninstalled it, should I still just use regcleaner and reinstall Avast?

It will not hurt your PC...use the installer anyways and yes also use the cleaner before re-installing avast

Ok I used regcleaner and reinstalled avast (which no longer pops up at startup saying it's in dispute with Norton), but my Search and System restore still don't work.

Did you also use the uninstaller from the norton site to be sure ALL remnants were removed?

If you have an actual XP installation disc try start/run and then copy and paste sfc /scannow in the box. This will replace any corrupted system files.

If that doesn't work, you may have to do a repair install:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...
Then you'll have to reload the critical updates.

RESOLVED.

I googled "System Restore Comes Up Blank" and scrolled through a 10-page forum post, and somebody said it was most likely a registry error, and the easiest way to fix it?
Install IE7 if I am still running 6. The IE7 install would repair all problems with the .dll's.

It did it.
Thanks for you help anyways, even though it had nothing to do with Norton anyways.
Now I can properly remove it all using the search toolbar.
