Comment:

My home desktop has the following symptoms;

When I select a new web page it always revert back to the home page.
Unable to open anti-virus software
Unable to open files on the computer.
Ran BitDefender Boot CD and the software said that I had a virus that was located in \\?\globalroot|\Device__max++>4D912258:x86.dll
I'm unable to locate this file.

Office Depot stated the Microsoft had a software that could fix this issue.

Any suggestions?

an easy way to check that is to run Avast Free:

allow it to do a bootscan on reboot. Whatever it finds you can move to the chest. If it is in the registry be sure to google whether it can be removed.

Post back and let us know how you make out. If that doesn't remove your problem you may want to use unhackme. I have used this on many machines with great results.

Follow the beginners guide on the left of the page and run ALL the tests untill the PC shows no more infections. After running the first virus tests, the buttons change so you can run the rest of the tests.

Unhackme has built-in responses and if you are not sure if something is safe to remove, google it or post back and we'll tell you if it is safe to remove.
This saves you lots of time in repairing your problem.
Good Luck

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

I think it's a rootkit. Avast may actually help. If not then maybe Rootrepeal will help you.
