Web Hijack - help appreciated!

Specs: Windows XP
Hi all..

I am grateful for any help you can offer me! I noticed that my Mcafee hadn't updated for a few days and that some sort of nasty had crept in as I was being redirected to all sorts of websites. I tried to go to the Mcafee site for help but it wouldn't let me on - no error message or anything, it just wouldn't connect. I spoke to Mcafee over an online chat via another PC and they told me to replace the host file, uninstall Mcafee and then reinstall. I did everything except manage to reinstall Mcafee as I can't get on the website. I still have the problem and have run Ad-Aware and Bullguard (my new antivirus which has I installed after all these problems) with no luck whatsoever - am still getting redirected all over the place, I have run a scan on Hijack this and have the log if anyone would like to view it. I'd be really grateful for any help. I am quite concerned as I use this PC to run my business and had my website hacked (FTP passwords stolen - have since changed these!!)

Thanks, Stuart

hopefully you used the McAfee uninstaller from their website. If you don't run that, McAfee is just like Norton and imbeds all over the HD making it extremely hard to remove. If the remnants are still there, no other AV or firewall will work properly.
Now here is what I would suggest.
1- Ccleaner Slim (no toolbar) run it and remove all it finds, that will get rid of excess junk that clogs up other scans.
2- Malwarebytes- be sure to update it and remove all it finds.
3- Trojan Remover is also free for 30 days, you could run that too.
4- F-secure Blacklight is great for checking for keyloggers

See how you make out and post back, thanx

Thanks for the message and the advice.

OK - I have run the Mcafee uninstaller but it freezes half way through when removing 'MBK' so have been unable to do this.

I've installed and run all of the programmes you suggested - Malwarebytes found a couple of nasties which have been removed. The others found nothing.... and am still getting redirected when going on certain sites. I can't access www.mcafee.com either.

I am considering throwing the thing out the window!!! ;0)

Any help appreciated - thanks guys!

download avast free and install it and let it do a bootscan on reboot and move all it finds to the chest.
That should take care of the problem.

If not, also run super-anti spyware and remove all it finds.
These are all on one page when you click on my link in my signature. Good Luck.

If that doesn't work you may have to run Hijackthis and post your results and I can take a look at it for you.

Hi - I tried Avast and it wouldn't install - it gave me an error of : There was an error during the set-up process' - it gave me a log as well which I can post if needed.

I haven't run super-anti spyware yet as I thought I would be best to do it in the order you said...

Any suggestions greatly appreciated - this bloody computer is going to go at a million miles an hour out of the window LOL!

Cheers, Stu
