Combo fix has been found with a rootkit buried within the program and is highly reccommended that you not use the program and remove it from your system.....

Just google it and you shall see all the info on this guy!

I know of an older problem that caused it to be pulled from public use because of a rootkit interfering with it making combofix delete legit files that was recently resolved. It was then put back in public use. If you have any current references to this problem you are stating please post the references.

Found one site that updated the old warning.

I was looking at the security and virus section of this forum and found a reference to someone telling someone else to d/l combo fix from another site...I remember this coming up before which caused me to google for the program and found that it was 2 months ago that there was an issue about that program...combo fix.

I searched this forum and did not find any references to combo fix or the recall of the program.

I then posted the warning...

I followed protocol on posting this warning...I do not like the idea that you think that I (an old poster here on this forum) would do anything less than follow proceedure for posting any kind of warning.

The issue now is to figure out why a search was made but no references to the program came up...it stated 0items of 1 request or something similar and showed only a blank page with advertisements on both sides.

No offense intended here lurkswithin.

We would need the references to resolve any issues Combofix might have. I would only forward them to the appropriate people so that a proper investigation could quickly be made.

FYI.. Quote" Just google it and you shall see all the info on this guy!"

This guy "sUBs" is one of the most respected vermin fighters out there, if guy should mean "Combofix" results are the same.

"I followed protocol on posting this warning"

Really? I'm unsure of what you mean by that, but what you did do was to post an unsubstantiated, 'facts lite' warning, along with the imprecation "just Google it"

Now, I mean no undue offense, but regardless of your tenure here, do you not see how flawed your approach was in this matter?

You've yet to produce confirmation, and, in fact the only cited source we have here debunks your message

You don't yell "fire" in a crowded theatre, and you don't post dire warnings on a public forum unless you are certain of your facts

Here is the warning the users, under supervised guidance received.

"The tool, ComboFix has been temporarily withdrawn.
The author discovered a rootkit infection that will intefere with ComboFix's running.
This will cause Combofix to be UNSAFE FOR USE on your machine.
Even if you manage to find a mirror for the tool, PLEASE DO NOT RUN THIS TOOL
Apologies for any inconvenience caused."

The tool was pulled before the warnings
were posted online. I gave jabuck a heads up
at the time in a members post.

"I searched this forum and did not find any references to combo fix or the recall of the program."

As jabuck is on the need to know list, I did
not feel the need to post the warning.

The point is that there was an issue related to a bad program that is designed to help repair computers...ok it may have been fixed...but how many people had that program already in their computers and were not aware of the problem to fix it.My warning brought it out so that people can decide on their own as to the worthiness of the one they have already downloaded onto their computers. It opened up the discussion concerning this program so that all in this forum are aware.

The warning did as it was intended to do! It was a good warning. It was good because it was not discussed here and the members of this forum made aware of the problems surrounding this program.

If you had information concerning this then you should have posted that information instead of trying to cover it up.

FYI...Combofix was never a bad program, bad programs don't help millions world wide fix their computers. It was simply compromised by a bad program (rootkit) created by a hacker, then it was updated to protect itself and the millions of computers that it helps to repair.

Just like an antivirus program or any other program (windows, java, adobe, nero), they can be hacked. If they are not updated they can be ruined by "bad" programs and you cannot predict the path or method these hackers will use but once reported corrections can be made to defuse these routes.

Many great tools have been pulled from public use because people crap out their computers by wrongly using them then criticize the author.

It was not a good warning.

Your subject text is out right wrong and this post should be considered misinformation, then should be deleted.

And by the way, no offense intended.

Garbage! The program was buggered...(glad that it was fixed) but that still is no reason to hide the fact that it was buggered. There are many programs out there that are being used with no updated materials. Is that program self updating? NO!!!! where is the home download page? Hidden behind a forum. How can people get to update the program if there is no reference to it and no home page! All they can do is uninstall the program and reinstall it as the designer suggested.

You are right in the aspect that there are/were some great programs that were pulled and no longer available. It was meant to be! If that program is so damn great then it will survive this without any problems...if not...that speaks for itself...

It is the trial that all programs must submit to. Your overly protection of it is crap. All the great programs have been run through the mill and they survived SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D both had SYMANTIC classifying them as bad while their own multimillion dollar hype pushed norton crap to all the OEM builders. Spybot and spywareblaster survived that onblast because they were great programs.
If that program survives then it was a great program...the problem is that it is being covered up and protected not because it is such a great program but simply because you are too close to the designer. To be a viable reference you must seperate yourself from biases such as friendships and oblgations. If not your evaluations are worth crap!

by the way no offense meant

Keep in mind this post did bring to light a discussion about the program. That in itself is one of the reasons for the forum. Keep up the good work Lurks.
