Reply: (edit)I assume everything works and the icons are still on your screen. If you don't have a firewall it could have been put there without you downloading anything. It could be a background picture that has been forced on your wall papper.I would see if i could change the wall paper and then get a good free firewall, then go to trendmicro for a free online scan or either pandaware. Then go to majorgeeks.com and download spywareblaster and install and protect whatever it says.Maby go to lavasoft and download adaware and run it and do whatever it says.If you do get rid of your problem without a firewall or some kind of protection it may just come back. This seems like a lot but after you get it all on its easy to keep up. I have all of these and i never have a computer issue.

Reply: (edit)My kid got slammed with the same bug. Spybot and adaware s/e wouldn't touch it.Norton was tagging files as quick as it could but couldn't find the source or quarinteen it. We ran a scan from trendmicro and it located it but I couldn't find anything that would fix it.I ended up doing a reformat only because I didn't have alot of time to play with it. I cut the kid loss on it for a view hours to see if he could find some good free tools through google but nothing she tried worked. But trendmicro was able to find it, if that helps any one. It was easier for me to just had the kid the cd's and say dump it and start over. SHe just had music and a few pictures to save so it was no big deal.Sorry I don't have a fix but just wanted to let you know we got hit about the same time and this is what we found.

Reply: (edit)The name of the infection is winctrl32.dll. It's the primary drop file of a virus. The reason why antivirus softwares are unable to remove it is because it has a verification signature from microsoft. It also has other tandem files (mostly sys and drivers, one of the other files is named winctrl32.dl_). It's fairly hard to remove them. You'll need special manual removal tools but it can be removed.

Reply: (edit)Go to bleepingcomputer.com and find the article about Antivirus2009 & Google on the main page. Follow the directions at the bottom of the article to uninstall Antivirus 2009. I downloaded the free malwarebytes software and the bluescreen virus was removed on the first attempt. This is the only solution I've found that worked. No joke. Awall
