The following warning appeared in today's issue of Spyware Weekly Newsletter:
_______________________________________

From Patrick Kolla, developer of Spybot S&D antispyware:

For the past two weeks, I got massive complaints from people who saw recommendations for Spybot-S&D on some TV show or heard about it on TV, and tried to go for it through the TV/radios website. Somehow, a bad link to Spybot-S&D is on its way and leading people to think that SpyHunter or SpyKiller would be the recommended Spybot-S&D. People downloading these two are forced to pay to remove spyware, and in the case of SpyKiller are even directed to us for support!

So my warning: please double-check what you've got before you pay anything!

Also, if you were mislead to SpyHunter or SpyKiller through Google AdWords, please contact Google. Google promised me some weeks ago they wouldn't do any more advertisement on my trademarked name "spybot", but I again receive complaints that they do, and this struggle with Google is going on for 4 months now.

I contacted google about this and received a reply. It' pretty long so I won't post it here - basically they said they would review the ads - but there are a LOT of paid ads still on Google with the term "spybot" that are those two programs.

Here's the link to send a complaint to google:

I'm starting to wonder about google's ethics...

Thanks for posting that info......has anyone heard anything about the "bad" reference files that were issued in last week's update?
Anyone know if Spybot will come out with a fix, or a correction update?
I'm assuming that my Spybot is functioning, but I'm not positive as I've read of flaws in the last update, and somehow Spybot now being unable to detect spywares. Maybe this explains why my Spybot doesn't find anything, but Adaware will come up with a couple tracking cookies when I do a back-to-back scan with both programs.
Anyone have any thoughts, or know anything?
Thanks a bunch!

Dear "CREATOR"
I love your program but it can't cope with the problem I posted on this site: regarding the insidious hijacking of browsers by www.magicsearch.ws/.... Below is the message I left in the forum. Please look into this problem. It is as bad as any virus. REgards,
Fredric Willaert (timedancer@joimail.com)

This is the post mentioned.

I'm having the same problem. I stumbled onto your site thru GOOGLE (read..GOD)I will try ALL of y'alls (I'm from Georgia, [read "you all" in plural])advice and will report back with my suckcess. "IT" includes each of you struggling with this insidious BAST%$#@&^%^$$ard who created this "virUS". If anyone has a CURE please let me know. A work-around is to launch the browser BEFORE starting your ISP, or just hit the stop icon before it can get to the site of those S>O>B>s. ANYONE who knows the solution please advise me.
THANX YOU GUYS,
Fredric the (timeDancer@joimail.com)

G'day,

Just a thought. If a work around is to start your browser before you connect to your ISP, then perhaps it is getting in from the "outside". Do you have a firewall installed?
Also, have you checked all of the starup points (win.ini and msconfig startup)for references to this website?
regards,
Elric

Hello wawadave, yes, I hope if there is in fact any problem, that it is fixed soon. I'm not sure that my Spybot is working or not; as it doesn't seem to find anything. My Adaware will turn up, maybe one or two tracking cookies. I read on another post elsewhere in the forum, of the possible Spybot problem; that was my only concern - if Spybot had some bad reference files. Perhaps I should give it a test and temporarily shut off my SpywareBlaster, and see if it then detects anything then.

Hi Elric, I read the post by Fredric above, but I can't quite decipher what he is referring to....something about Spybot, I gather?? Take care all, if I figure out this Spybot, I'll post here again; or if anyone can add some more info on it, please leave a comment. It would be nice to know if there is indeed any troubles with it; particularly as it is such a great program.

I too have had troubles with SpyBot not finding tracking cookies for the past few months. Ad-Aware and SpySweeper both find the cookies but prior scans by SpyBot do not so don't know what is going on here.
Thx and Good luck,
Michael

I have also noticed that SpybotSD has not been detecting usage or tracking cookies since the Feb definitions update. Adaware finds the cookies after a previous run of Spybot finds the system clean. I completely uninstalled Spybot from the system, reg entries, user application folder etc.., program files. Reinstalled and updated from web still no detected cookies. Removed Spybot again and dragged unupdated Feb def Spybot folder from another computer and ran on computer, cookies were found by spybot that adaware confirmed. Only difference is that the Feb def update by Spybot. Hope the fix is in the works. I do not like to have an unupdated spyware detector that will miss new threats.

Followup to last message. I have discovered the problem with Spybot not scanning for tracking or usage cookies is caused by a corrupt includes cookies.sbs file in the Feb def updates. The Feb file is unreadable in notepad but the Dec 2003 file open in notepad with a readable listing of cookies to search for. Replaced the Feb 2004 cookies.sbs file with the Dec 2003 file. Spybot searches for over 12,195 nasties and when finished finds the tracker cookies. I now have the benefits of the Feb def update plus the cookie scanning.

If you go to C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Updates\includes.cookies.zip, then extract everything into C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Includes, your Spybot should start finding cookies again - although I'm not sure about the other, more malevolent nasties...
