Most of Symantec's removal tools (depending on the threat) have to be run in safe mode. Merely save the removal tool using a virus free computer, to a formatted clean floppy disc, start the affected computer in safe mode, insert the floppy, and run it from there. Then reboot in normal mode and see if the problem persists. Hope this helps!

After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter. Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat You will first be presented with a warning. I'm glad you questioned that, I made an error in the second file which would not hurt anything just would not kill the bug. Should be: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dbeeg.* The name is always backward and written this way means delete ever file that begins with that name.

Okay I finally am back with a new log. Looks like the 020's are gone but the BHO are still there even after I put the corrected entry you gave me. Now also I get a message abouta new Newwork Security Wizard has been connected. So now what? After running the ewido twice I had search elite bar still on there also...

I wonder if the reason it says file missing is due to the tech that came and renamed the files trying to get rid of it also

Susan, I'm back also. Sound like you had some success. Run this free online scan from Panda When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to the desktop, then copy/paste into the text editor and post it along with an Ewido log and a new Hijack This log. Be sure to run the ewido scan in safe mode.

Yea you're telling me about confusing, I stay confused. Some of this is repetitive but it is because we remove a few of the infections at a time to keep confusion at a minimum. That was an old HT version log.To get rid of the old version go to start>control panel>add/remove programs>scroll down to "Hijack This 1.98.2>right click on it>click change/remove then follow the prompts to uninstall it. While you are in add/remove progarms look for for these items and if found uninstall them: istbar elite tool bar elite bar. Next part of the problem in removing the BHO's is that real time protection Spybot's tea timer is running so we'll need to temporaryly turn it off. To do so: Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode" On the left hand side, Click on Tools Then click on the Resident Icon in the List Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts. Restart your computer. As far as I can tell you did not post an Ewido log. Post a HT log from the 1.99 version and we will try deleting the BHO's again.

I'm guessing that you turned off tea timer. Run the HT scan, close all windows and browsers except HT. place a check in the box to the left of each of the following items then press"fix checked". Ok,still there although dead. Only other thing I can think of is to remove spysweeper and spybot from add/remove programs Run Ht and remove those 4 items Then re-download spybot after they are removed. As you can see by this item O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe tea timer is still running. I have seen similar problem but with spysweeper. And all you have lost is a little time.

Thanks for being supported of me..I am typing in the dark now since this computer is in a occupied room. So do I turn tea timer off for good or turn it back on? Plus what about the other elite bars I mentioned? Last question when I rebooted my computer it showed Zone Alarm with a alert about a new network connection. I denyed it and it wanted to know if I really wanted to turn off the network security wizard...any ideas on what that means...I just recently had SP2 installed and the tech installing said to leave ZAlarm on if it wasn't conflicting...how can I tell if it is?

SusanM,Once you think elite toolbar is gone turn tea time back on then turn safe mode off then back on. I think you are getting a conflict between windows firewall a zonealarm.Just turn off the windows firewall and see if the problem subsides.

go to control panel>security center>windows firewall(bottom of screen) and it's still there in network connections. You have better protection than most. The sp2 will help,so will spywareblaster.

Okay I went to Security Center and the firewall was turned off already...hmm don't know how that happened. so I went to Network Connections and my SBC Yahoo Broadband (Wan miniport) (PPPOE)is Disconnected and a Lan or High Speed Internet Local Area Connection is connected Intel (R) PRO/10000 MT Network is connected. In IE try saving as favorite>click favorite>right click link>send to>desktop.If that icon works delete the old one. Not real good on icons.

I finally had the time to run another active scan by Panda and you can see the results below. Virtumonde has changed it's file name. Should I try to go into safe mode and try the VundoFix again using the file path as you instructed above but using pmnnk.dll and then reverse with .* Please advise...It would be nice to get rid of this once and for all! If the Panda scan is clean. Then download and run ccleaner to clean out all your temp files. Make sure there is not anything in the recycle bin that you need as ccleaner will delete recycle bin items unless checked not to do so Purge System Restore by shutting it down and restarting it. Thanks for getting back to me. My daughter was in a major car accident yesterday so I am going to put this off for later. Being my hijack log looks good so far I think I can wait. Yes I have most of the items listed on the time monitoring program list by castle cops so that will take time shutting things down. I do question when the correct time to shut off the system restore. I have always shut it off before going into safe mode and turning it back on once the system was clean. Are you asking me to do it at a different time? Just a little confused there...

I always wait until the system is mostly clean. The reason is that I have used a infected restore point to keep from formating more than once. As far as the correct time to shut system restore down, you can get many different opinions there. Booting into safe mode seldom has anything to do with purging system restore. Above everything else,I sure hope you daughter is ok.

Okay I shut off the time monitoring programs. Looks like tea time was still running. Didn't change anything. Anyway when I typed the path as C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnk.dll and then C:\WINDOWS\system32\knnmp.* (backwards) it said path not found...hj ran and ran panda scan to get the same results as before. Try this. Reboot into safe mode. Turn off tea timer(may be starting on reboots). Then setup the computer to view hidden files and folders by going to start>control panel>folder options>view tab>scroll down to and tick the circle beside "show hidden files and folders". Then untick the box beside"hide extension for know file types" and "hide protected operating system files". Navigate to and delete this file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pmnnk.dll

Once you get into safe mode and have the hidden files set as mentioned and tea timer turned off. Click start>my computer> (double click these) local disk (c:)>Windows>System32, then scroll down to this file(pmnnk.dll)>right click on the file, when the properties box pops up, click delete.

Thanks for the details. I will give it a try later. Also I wanted to mention that when I ran ewido it brought up the elitebar and search locate again. See below. It says it cleans them but I suspect files are also left because I was told yesterday that it was trying to install and of course I always deny and to remember that setting but it comes back. I finally had time to delete the pmnnk.dll file after rebooting in safe mode, turning off tea timer, and setting up the computer to view the hidden files. The file is gone only one item remaining in the registry. Any ideas how to get rid of that? Plus do you know when you have more than one profiles would a person have to perform spy/virus scans on each profile or does one eliminate everything on the computer???

SusanM, You need to run the scans for each user profile. It is suggested that you back up the registry before making any changes.As for sahagent go to start>run>type in regedit>ok Be careful here as changes in the registry can crash the computer so follow these directions closely. Now click edit>find>type in "sahagent" without the quotes>click find now. When it is located just above your start button the path to it will be written. Write it down then click edit>find next. Continue doing this until a registry editor box pops up stating"finished searching through the registry". To close the registry click file>exit. This did not remove the file only located it. Post the paths that you found.

How do I back up the registry?

nothing was found when doing as suggested. I had also a few days ago went to Symantec and researched it also. The technical file name is Bundle.exe I went looking for the registry subkeys and 5 registry keys and never found any. So maybe it's just an empty folder?? I also put in Bundle.exe in the search and it didn't turn up anything..
