I have norton which keeps picking up W32.spybot.worm. I followed Nortons direction by deleting the files Norton quaranteened and going into regedit to run and runonce and I also remembered to turn or the restore function. (although the virus was on for a couple of days before I turned off restore so I am sure it got backed up.

After I did all this Norton still picks up remnants of the virus and post address such as, C:\Documents and Settings\allusers\Britney_Spears_Game.Exe, also C:\Explorer.exe and D:explorer.exe.

I have tried different virus scans from the web, Spybot search and destroy, MircroTrend and others and they do not pick up any virus. Actually if I click off the worning that Norton gives and do a scan with Norton it will not pick it up either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Joe Paradise

This worm shouldn't cause the explorer.exe files to become infected.

However, the Britney Spears file is definitely something it created. Have you tried to delete it?

When norton comes up it gives the file name containing the Britney_Spears and then under that gives the W32.Spybot.worm that I guess is attached to that file.

Yes I have tried to delelte but can't bring the file up by doing a search.

I also just did another scan with norton in safe mode and it found 93 infected files which I had to quanteen before it would let me delete them.

Thanks for the reply

Joe

I've got the same problem as Joe. W32.Spybot.Worm in the same directories with the same name. There must be a port open, which let's the virus come on your pc. the problem lasts at least 2 months and there's still no patch to fix it (the open port). i think it spreads itself a little bit like "blaster". Try turning on the xp internet connection firewall. This seems to stop the virus poping up

i have read all your messages in regards to the britney spears w32.spybot.worm as i have been having the most fustrating time of my life getting rid of it. And I thank everyone here for your imput on this problem. i just wanted to say i just installed Zone Alarm (which can be downloaded from cnet) and find that my puter with windows xp is still trying to comunicate with a unknown or some IP. At least i can stop this action and also I seem to have stopped that nagging message from norton antivirus which tells me of infected files. I think a good firewall on xp is what is needed to prevent this worm from exposing it self to and from your computer. I just wanted to share with you all my results. Should it not work I'll be sure to return. But I think i've found this to be a solution.

Thanks again all.
