I am using Windows XP with a dial up connection to the internet. After 5-10 minutes on the internet I get a windows error message saying:
W32 generic host process has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. Send / Dont send error report.
After you have chosen what to do the internet browser shuts down and the internet is not usable, although if you pick up the telephone you still get the scrambled tone, signalling that the computer is connected but doesn't know it is.
I have Norton antivirus and have been informed that i may have picked up W32 Netsky virus and another type of worm (W32 nelchia worm i think) but i have downloaded the removal tool from symantec for both of these and they both say that these were not found on the system. Also these viruses do not come up on the complete system scan.
ARE THESE 2 PROBLEMS CONNECTED.
WHAT CAN I DO apart from wiping the hard drive.
Please Help
Jon

Not 100% sure but it sounds more like the blater worm virus.
You can get the removal software from Norton's website and the patch from Microsoft.
Read the instructions and disable system recovery before doing anything.
Good luck

sounds like another norton victim..throw out norton and get some real antivirus protection..its called avg and it insures 100% detection and easy removal thru its test results..only if its unable to put it in vault or delete it..in which case u have to do it manually.
www.grisoft.com..click download avg 6.0 free..feel the power of this worldclass antivirus protection and enjoy..its free for u to try.
good luck.

Same problem here! Just the same... got the message, the connection still on but not a byte transferred... no viruse detected (I run eTrust inoculate computer associates)
What can it be??????
Thanks to anybody!
Luke
