vista will not reboot

Specs: vista
My Toshiba Satellite laptop with vista will not reboot, gets to a prompt of indicating windows is loading files (not the normal boot up text) then nothing, just an empty screen. The screen had been freezing within the browser, but the last time suddenly the whole screen turned to grey and I had to power it off.
I've tried variations in F12-F2--nothing.
Now, it will not reboot to the desktop--what to do ?

would certainly appreciate any feedback, thanks !

Ok, hopefully safe mode will still work. As soon as your pc starts loading start tapping f8. It should give you option to start in safe mode. If safe mode does not work... Well it is too late for you to save vista. You can use a Linux live cd to save a few files and then do a fresh install
