I'm having a terrible time with McAfee VirusScan and the mcshield.exe service. Every time I POP new email, send email, or hit a page in Firefox with a Java Applet, mcshield.exe takes 100% of my cpu cycles and my whole machine grinds to a halt. If I disable the 'On Access Scan" service, everything works fine. But disabling it means I don't have real time protection!

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? I was thinking maybe there's a way to limit the percentage of cpu that mcshield can grab?

Windows XP, VirusScan Enterprise 8.0, 1.5 Ghz processor, 1.5 Gb Ram.

Thanks!

I would make sure that you do not have a virus, worm, or trojan. Have you turned system restore off and restarted your computer, during the restart enter he safe mode and run McAffee while in it? Then restart againg and go to:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and run their scan. If the system is clean and the problem continues, I would try another antivirus program like Esest's NOD32, or the free ones like; Antivir, AVAST or AVG.
