After downloading some files from the internet I started to notice problems with my new PS2 keyboard. Most letters could not be typed, no symbols at all. Avast virus scanner failed to identify any malware on the computer. After checking for viruses at trendmicro.housecall65.com I found out there was a trojan, a worm and also some issues with Windows XP identified. On eliminating these elements I then restarted the computer and found continued problems with the keyboard (certain keys not functioning, others producing random actions such as closing or opening other windows).
I formatted the hard disk, then reinstalled Windows XP Prof. but immediately the same problem. (I previously tried recovery console but it was not possible to select this option due to the malfunctioning keyboard.)
Next I tried a PS2 to USB adapter for the keyboard to see if it worked with the USB port but this made no difference. The keyboard works perfectly on my other PC. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard before, after and during boot up to no effect.
With difficulty I got into BIOS but no keys functioned and so it was impossible to make settings modifications. Only on rare ocassions now can I access BIOS, the rest of the times the keyboard does not respond.
I have been able to get into dos but can only type nonsense symbols as the keyboard doesn’t allow me to type letters.
I have tried various antivirus programmes, PCillin, Avast, McAfee and none have been able to repair the damage done by the virus. I even tried connecting another hard disk but still had the same problems with BIOS.
I thought I might need to upgrade the bios so got the update for my motherboard but to install it requires me typing in some dos commands, something my keyboard won’t allow me to do.
Seems like I’m running out of options now - I can’t select Safe Mode in Windows XP on rebooting the computer now. Any help would be much appreciated.
