Virus won't let me open any files / programs

Specs: Windows 7, pentium dual-core cpu 2.59nGHz / 4GB

I am running Windows 7 64bit.
I went to switch over my anti-virus provider and in doing so have unleashed a virus that is stopping everything. The internet was not connected when I uninstalled the AV and when the pc rebooted nothing now works. It was running Avast! before the uninstall.

I can open folders but no files or programs. Even in safe mode the pc still won't let me open anything so can't run the internet, malwarebytes, etc. Have tried the 3 versions of rkill and won't open those either.

Have now resorted to a system restore and everything is back to before the uninstall but still won't open anything / antivirus is now disabled and won't let me open it. There are no fake virus warnings or anything else that would give me an idea of the name of the virus.

I have access to the internet through my laptop and can transfer files across by a USB if needed.

Have removed a few bad ones a few years back but this one has me stumped.

Any advice is much appreciated. :)

Factory Recovery or re-install from Windows 7 DVD.

Yeah that would be my last resort.

Hoping there is another way around it.

I have the exact same issue. I was running avast and I have tried all that you have minus the system restore. Even had a friend do a full system scan by hooking his laptop into my computer. It found some infected files but did not fix the issue. Please post your solution if you find one

pip22, your solution was on a last sound like most of the Dell, HP and other techs who automatically suggest a fresh install to save them lots of time trying to analyse a should know better than that ;-)

try physically removing your hard drive and slaving the drive to another PC.
Run malwarebytes and fix all it finds. Then run trojan remover and hitman pro on the drive STILL while it is slaved, as well as a virus scan.
When all infections are removed, pop the drive back in and boot it up....that should then allow you access to the drive.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions 7 Medals
