Subject: Virus turns off all usb portsOS: XP HomeCPU/Ram: don't knowModel/Manufacturer: Dell demension e510 |
Comment: I am working on a friend's computer that I am told has a virus. However, when I try to boot it up, the usb keyboard and mouse are non-responsive. Therefore, we only get as far as the login screen. I think it is a windows problem because the keyboard does work in the bios but as soon as windows starts loading the "NUM Lock" LED turns off which seems to indicate that the ports is turned off. Have any of you ever seen this before? Thanks in advance for any help that you can give on this matter.

Reply: (edit)I also forgot to mention that the PC does not have any ps2 ports available to try. The usb mouse was plugged in to a usb port on her monitor( which I don't have here).

Reply: (edit)Well firstly, when the computer loads up and the NUM Lock light goes out, take both the KLeyboard and mouse out and plug them back in, see if they are picked up by windows, does windows load completly? if so unplug and replug when in windows. also try a different USB port.

Reply: (edit)Thanks, that worked and I'm able to log in now. There is a message that comes up saying "Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection! It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from spyware!" I know that it is bs but I'm not sure what type of virus I have. There was a process called winable.exe that I disabled. I think that might be a virus, but I'm still getting that message. Thanks again for your help.

Reply: (edit)Don't do it! Dont let the message take you right back to the same people who put that crap on the computer. A search on google for FREE anti spyware will render enough downloads from honest vendors to take care of the problem....if it even exist. I think of this as Scareware....Your infected. Quick buy from me. Why when it can be had for free? Run the anti spyware in safe mode.
