Subject: Virus Software conflict w/ Monitor
OS: Windows 98/SE
CPU/Ram: Pent. 3, 256 MB
Comment:

I recently purchaced McAfee VirusScan Home Edition V. 7.0. When I loaded it on my computer, within a minute, the monitor screen went blank. I rebooted and within another minute of Windows loading, the monitor again went blank. After several attempts to reboot (unsuccessfully), I received a message on the blank monitor that said something about the monitor frequencies. I deleted the VirusScan software from my computer, and the problem with the monitor was resolved. I reinstalled the program just to see if there was an installation error, and the same problem occured again, so once again, I deleted it. I contacted the McAfee help page and even talked to a troubleshooting personell. I didn't get anywhere. If there is anyone who might be able to resolve this problem, please let me know.

Thanks,
ParadigmShift15

McAfee is creating many problems...
Try to give it back if it is possible.
You must try antivirus software before
you buy it...
Better install a free program like AVG for now, don't stay without one.

The software can't go back, I wish it could. So I am stuck with trying to fix the problem now.

Most people have their computers slowed down by Mcafee. This is a new one. It must be causing a conflict with with your video card drivers. I am afraid if it were me, I would get another antivirus program. If Mcafee is unwilling to back up their product on an installtion issue, it makes you wonder what support you will get later on from them. You can buy Norton 2002 just about anywhere on the internet(Amazon/Ebay) for about ten dollars. For ten bucks you could save yourself a lot of grief. In the meantime, get ETRUST, SOLO or NOD32 for a free trial, or as edsod recommends Grisoft's AVG, which is free for now.

Thanks a lot. I will just resort to that. I might report the problem to McAfee again and tell them if they can't fix it, I would like a refund...doubtful that it will work. But I can try. Where do I get these free trial programs?

The price for SOLO and ETRUST is $24.95, NOD32 is $39 and AVG is free. All these programs can be downloaded from the cnet downloads website, and all use very little system resources and are small programs compared to some antivirus programs. Please read the user reviews. If you had read them for Mcaffee, I doubt if you would have made your purchase. If you need a firewall get Sygate or Kerio, both are free and are available at cnet downloads too. Take care and all the best!
