After reading so many posts I am really now thoroughly confused! I have Norton's Anti-virus and Norton's Firewall on my PC. I thought that was sufficient protection for my PC but obviously that must not be the case. Other than the two mentioned what other software protection should I add? I thought about getting the Norton's Internet Security. I don't want to over kill, but how much protection is enough? What software is recommended if I need more?

This is the list.. and some more of what I tell or install on clients computers to help protect them.

(1) Download a free program called swat-it from http://swatit.org it is a free trojan scanner. It will scan yuor system for just trojan based infections.

(2) Download and run a free program called Spybot search and destroy. This will get rid of all spyware and crap on your system. It can be downloaded from http://www.safer-networking.org/

(3) Download a free program called ADaware from Lavasoft, it does many of the same things that spybot does, but may catch some different crap.. it can be downloaded at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

(4) If you don't have a firewall installed, I suggest that you get one. You can download a free firewall from http://zonelabs.com

(5) I also recommend downloading a program called Finjan surfin guard pro.. it is not free, it sells for around 35.00.. This will catch anything new that may come out.. it can be found at http://www.finjan.com/

(6) To get rid of the crap that Internet Explorer keeps track of, download a free program called CleanUp by Steven Gould.. you can get it from here: http://users3.ev1.net/~stevengould/cleanup/

(7) Spyware Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

(8) Spyware Guard
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

(9) IE-Spyad

Here's what I use:
AVG*free free anti virus

AD-Aware
SpyBot
These two get rid of any spy/adware

SpywareBlaster
This guy prevents problems

CW-Shredder-Spybot-HJT
CW-Shredder - Looks for the CoolWebSearch (a hijacker) - check for updates before using. (I just ran the new version and it found two bad registry enteries on my system)

ZoneAlarm

Tommyo..

it does have an installed built in..
however.. I use an excellent free program..

Total Uninstall

Total Uninstall can help you to monitor any changes that were made to your system during installation of a new software product and allow you to perform a complete uninstall without having to rely on the supplied uninstall program (which may leave files or changes behind).

Total Uninstall will save these changes and if you decide to uninstall the application, it will reverse all changes to the previous state.

For getting rid of the garbage that Internet Explorer leaves behind I would recommend Cache, Cookie and Windows Cleaner for Moleculsoft.

www.moleculsoft.com

It can be programed to run automatically at a set time each day. The first time you run it will take a few minutes, but thereafter run on a daily basis it will only take a few second. Left to its own devices, Internet Explorer can swallow up gigabytes of disk space.

Thanks everyone. I thought I was doing something with my Norton Firewall and Anti-virus! I had no idea that I needed so much software for protection. I always thought Norton was the top of the line for virus protention/prevention. I guess that was an incorrect conclusion on my part. No one commented on Norton's Internet Security? Any reason why? All this protection software out there, why isn't there one that encompasses everything!

Anyway thanks for the info.

You probably got no comment on Norton's Internet Security because no one uses it. Norton Anti Virus is fine, but their Firewall is not so good. I have tried setting it up for somebody once and found it cumbersome, awkward and hard to use, and I knew what I was doing. A novice has no chance.

Personally I would ditch Norton's Firewall, keep the Anti Virus and use Zone Alarm as well as Ad-Ware.

All these programme do slightly different jobs. There is some overlap but there is no one application that will do everything.

If anyone were to devise a combined, firewall, anti virus, pop stopper and ad-ware killer then it would be easy. But such an application would be horrendously complicated.
