virus protection for cable connecti

I am considering using cable instead of dial up. My bro has cable and it is always on, even if you shut the computer off, which means no virus protection right or wrong? Same with zone alarm or any firewall its on if the computer is on. If my thinking is correct, how would I protect my computer since I dont want to leave it on all the time. My bros doesn't worry about it but I do. Anybody?

Rest assured that there is no way to infect your computer when it is shut off.
If you are really that paranoid over nothing then I'm sure D-Link or Linksys would like to get some of your hard earned cash in exchange for a cable/dsl router which acts as a hardware firewall.
Summary: By far, the best virus protection for a quick clean sweep would be NOD32. However, NOD32 only offers free updates for 30 days, after which you'll have to purchase it. Although both AVG and Avast! are ...
