You reference a "list" but do not cite its source. Whose list? Sygate's?
How many "lists" are out there?
Many, too many to remember.
Any list can be made to support/deny any product. One research business can say Sygate is #1, but does that make it true?
Alternatively, even if they said Zone Alarm was the best, like www.grc.com says, I would still want to decide for myself by using several over periods of time.
I, personally use Zone Alarm, but only because it works very well for me. Have no idea what it would do for others, as PCs are all so different and intricate. In addition, I cannot believe that anyone thinks Zone Alarm is too difficult to use. Their interface is set up for just that, learn as you use.
My best opinion is to try one firewall of your choice, and go from there. Be aware, Zone Alarm is notoriously difficult to remove form your PC, should you decide to not keep it. Besides, I would bet most people would find Zone Alarm to work just fine.
AVG is a good product, and the price is right...FREE. However, what about its limitations?
Namely, in complex virus removal.
I have used Norton Anti Virus for several years and nothing has ever caused me to want to change. The money I paid for Norton, I believe, has helped in preventing my PC from infection. I especially like the LIVE UPDATE feature, every couple of days, new virus definitions are sent to me via the Web and incorporated into my Norton. In addition, Norton has RESCUE DISKS option and good customer support. AVG has updates available also.
Granted, paying money for software is no guarantee, but in the case of Norton, well... it has never been and will never be FREE, but to me a few dollars is well worth avoiding major headaches that will come with a virus infection.
Another safety feature I like is at: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/
They have a REGISTRY PROTECTION program, whereby it will monitor your Windows registry for ANY changes, so any malicious program wanting to modify your registry in any way, the program notifies you with a POP UP alert asking you for permission, instead of automatically allowing the modification.
In addition, another program that I like is the following:
http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml
It is a START UP MONITOR, which notifies a PC user if ANY program is trying to ADD itself to your START/boot process, asking your permission to allow or disallow said modification.
