We have on going problems with viruses on our computer. just looking for some decent help. our computer loads up antivirus software, but then doesnt work, it says something about an ms-dos file missing. we use norton 2003 and avg. can viruses upset the chipset on the motherboard? the virus we had (among the FEW!) was a boot virus, we had to buy a new hard drive which was successfully installed. windows update no longer loads and the computer updates we downloaded caused our computer to mess up also. please please help! no problems before boot virus.

First decide which antivirus program you want and the either uninstall the other or disable it so it does not start at startup. If are sure that you have a boot virus go to http://www.f-secure.com/download-purchase/tools.shtml and get F Prot for DOS, copy the instructions because you will need them when you run the program using a floppy disk at startup. Then you need to delete the temporary internet files and off line content files, turn system restore off and restart the computer. During the restart eneter the safe mode(usually by tapping or holding down the F8 key) and then run your antivirus scan while in it. Since you paid for Norton make sure that you have liveupdate 2.5 instaled(add/remove program) and then check that the Symantec Liveupdate Icon settings are to the Express Mode and then set the appropriate settings by checkin al the boxes. If you do not have liveupdate 2.5 go to the Symantec website and at the top of the page you will see downloads, select liveupdate and download and install 2.5. During its instalation it will automaically uninstall the old version. Post back if you need more help. You mad no mention of a firewall, so make sure that you have a firewall, either XP or a third party installed and working.
