Comment:

I got some virus on my computer. It boots up to the desktop but no icons come up and the task bar blinks all over with different parts of it showing white. Can anyone help. I tried to get to CMOS to get it to boot from the CD rom with Norton's in there but hitting delete (which is what someone told me to do) didn't get me in there. It keeps booting to the spot I mentioned earlier.

How do I do anything on the computer if it won't boot up completely?

Can you get in using safe mode? First try last good known configuration. If that doesn't work choose safe mode and maybe try a system restore. Last thing to try is safe mode with networking so you can try the scans johnw recommended.

One more thing, if you have an XP disc, try a repair install and then go from there.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

I tried safe mode and last good known configuration and still only got to the desktop with only a flashing taskbar. I don't want to wipe out my harddrive. I have alot of files I need to save on there.

a repair install won't make you lose any programs or files, just the critical updates which you have to d/l again.

Take the drive out of your comp & slave it to another HD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case )
You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms.
Now use the other comp to clean the drive of virri, spyfiles, trojans.

Here are a range of free online sites to cleanup your comp. Use at least 2 from each group.
